The delivery of letters and parcels may get disrupted next week onwards as employees of the postal department will join a nation-wide protest of postal workers from January 17. The agitation is planned against the Government’s decision to close 10,000 post offices across the country.
The strike is being called by the National Federation of Postal Employees and Federation of National Postal Organisation. The main demands that the strike will press for are to stop privatisation in postal service and immediate recruitment to meet staff shortage.
The branch secretary of Ranchi GPO, Rajesh Kumar Tanti said, “The Government had accepted 80 per cent of our demands in July last year but has failed to implement them. Now, we will go on an indefinite strike from January 17th.” He also said that the Government should immediately drop the idea of introducing the recommendations made by Mickensey Company.
The employees of the General Post Office said that the strategy of the Government is to shrink the huge network of the postal department and to give a chance to the private sector for expanding its network. “We are also compelled to work on Sundays and are often called to the post office for attending meetings and seminars,” an employee of the GPO rued.
