Starting Tuesday! Wooo :)

Post by earlybird »

Have had "the" phone call asking me to start work on Tuesday. New year, new contract! I am chuffed!!! :dance

Ok, so for those who have asked questions about the job application process, I can finally answer those questions! It took two weeks from the online app to the interview, then two weeks from interview to the phone call which kick-started the crb checks. Taking away bank holidays and weekends, the CRB checks took six days. (that said, I think it went through quickly because I already had two current CRB's from previous work) It felt like everything took a long time, but now I have a contract, time is suddenly flying by and I have many questions!!!

1) What do I wear initially. I won't have a uniform straight away, apart from the high viz jacket. Are trainers ok?
2) I am expecting one thing only; on weds, when I start in the depo, I will know nothing! What should I expect? Will I be sorting straight away?
3) I never joined the union in my previous job and should've - is there a general union for RM staff?
4) Are dog biscuits to hand really helpful?! (if so, will buy some!)

I am very exciterable. Been waiting for this for a while now. :nana Happy New Year all :nana

It depends if you're in a mail centre of a delivery office but
1) What do I wear initially. I won't have a uniform straight away, apart from the high viz jacket. Are trainers ok? Wear something comfortable, until they give you uniofrm.
2) I am expecting one thing only; on weds, when I start in the depo, I will know nothing! What should I expect? Will I be sorting straight away? You'll get some training (from the coach) but if you're in a DO then it will be just learning how to deliver.
3) I never joined the union in my previous job and should've - is there a general union for RM staff? The CWU is the union for postal workers, ask the coach about joining.
4) Are dog biscuits to hand really helpful?! (if so, will buy some!) no, don't use them ever, the dogs get used to them and then the next postie who goes to deliver gets attacked because there's no biscuits (plus people can be particular about what their dogs get fed, me included, and not wanting some random person ginving them extras).

oooh didn't think about that with the biscuits :confused Thanks though - i'm glad I asked.

I'm delivering, but got to be in early (well, not too early 7.30) to do some sorting first.

I was having a slightly random thought earlier about strange initiation ceremonies into groups - I think i'm thinking too much! ha ha ha ha ha!!!

Hiya, it's all good!!! The lads are a riot which makes time pass easily. The work itself is ok - a few, what I call, achy hinges - nothing too bad so far. Get the feelin i'm bein eased in tho! Been on mostly collections, done a coupla deliveries. I like the variety between the two shifts! I'm still a little confused between ppi1, ppi2, etc etc when i'm unloading the van, but there's always people around to help! Still shadowin at the mo - got driving test tomorrow (urgh!), then am on my own. The main thing I worry about is not knowing my way around as I have done the same three deliveries/collections. Think I need to buy a map!! Also need to build up speed! The other guys walk to fast!!! I always thought I was fast, but obviously not fast enough! Am loving the job though! I needed a complete change and this is it!!! Love the fresh air, excersise, time pressure etc! Tis alllll good :) :nana

Not necessarily.
You need to find a comfortable pace you can sustain through the whole delivery.
It isn't an Olympic event and the other guys might just be muppets trying to make the new kid look slow.
If it looks like they are walking too fast...they are walking too fast. :cuppa
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
