If it's A4 and you only put a first class stamp on it it's probably been surcharged.

No, the company you've sent it to will have got a surcharge card telling them they have to pay to receive the item, if they don't pick it up then it will be returned to you (if you put a return address on it otherwise it'll be sent to the RLC who will open it to try to find an address to return it to).

After a card with details of outstanding postage has been delivered to the addressee and they pay the surcharge, it will be delivered or more likely they will take it from the office themselves.

Edit: blimey im slow.

inadequate postage
no return address
really you would do well to protect your own self interests
many companies will not pay charge items
you may wish to contact them and enquire if they got a card and arrange payment

Only if the recipient pays the surcharge.
In my experience small businesses usually do,big businesses and government departments don't always.
If they don't it will be returned to sender after the holding period(not sure how long for a surcharge).

Don't forget the time it will take for RLB (Returned Letters Branch) to process it, and the delivery time to get back to you. We're into Christmas Pressure now, so it might take a while.
