LTB 859/11 CWU Submission to the European Commission on State Aid for Royal Mail

No: 859/11
Ref: 67000
Date: 11th October 2011

TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS

Dear Colleague

CWU SUBMISSION TO THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION ON STATE AID FOR ROYAL MAIL

In order for the government to be able to implement its policy of taking on the Royal Mail Pension Plan deficit it needs first to be given clearance by the European Commission under state aid rules.

The European Commission is currently investigating the UK government’s application for state aid for Royal Mail which as well as allowing it to take on the pension deficit would also allow the restructuring of the company’s balance sheet.

The Commission published an open letter inviting submissions to the investigation on 9 September and giving stakeholders one month to submit evidence.

Please find attached the CWU Submission that has been endorsed, initially, by the Postal Executive and subsequently by the full NEC. The EU Submission is particularly significant to the overall positioning of pensions and the report that will go before the Policy Forum on the 10th November 2011.

Yours sincerely

Dave Ward Billy Hayes
Deputy General Secretary (P) General Secretary

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Summary.

The Government created this unholy mess by forcing a 13 year pension holiday, taking profits from the company without investing, forcing Liberalisation on the company before it was ready or even needed and generally screwing up the regulatory system.

The Government should be allowed to clean up the mess by relieving the company of the historic pension deficit and writing off the almost £2billion in loans but that doesn't have to mean privatisation.

The European Commission should respectfully mind it's own business.
