EDGEWATER, Colo. -- An Edgewater Police officer shot and killed a dog after it went after a postal worker, bit another officer and was in the process of biting him Monday afternoon.
At around 2:12 p.m. officers received a call from a postman who said he was being attacked by a large pit bull, a large Rottweiler and an unknown third dog.
He said the dogs had him pinned on a front porch of a residence in the 2400 block of Newland Street and at least two of the dogs broke through a screen window and began chasing him.
Responding officers found two teenagers trying to control two of the dogs.
According to Steve Davis, a spokesperson for the Edgewater Police Department, as officers got out of their cars and approached the teens the Rottweiler slipped out of the collar and attacked the officers, biting him several times in the thigh area.
He was able to get away as the dog went after the other officer.
“The Rottweiler pinned the second officer up against his patrol car, and the officer pulled his service weapon and shot the dog one time in the head after being bit by the dog,” Davis said.
The first officer was treated and released at the scene. The second officer was treated by paramedics and was released a short time later after being treated at the emergency room. The pit bull was removed from the residence following the incident.
Officers responded to the same address in May of 2011 twice in one day on an animal complaint that involved the same dogs.
In that case, the same pit bull was impounded after officers received complaints that it was chasing the same postman trying to bite him.
Edgewater also responded to the same address prior in 2010 and have given the same owner warnings as well. The name of the dog owner was not released. Charges are pending until a further investigation is completed.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

FFS, the Yanks shoot them and all we have is a delivery pouch to defend ourselves with (and then a standard letter from the DOM if they can be bothered).

Has anyone from the H & S got any idea of how we are to protect ourselves from dog attacks now that we use the LWT's ?
Would like to know if the number of dog attacks on posties has went up since the introduction of park and loop!

If they shot the owners the first time there would never have been a second incident

Hmmmm - wonder if its worth carrying a bradawl for those bite-and-hold types - I'm thinking that a 5 inch steel spike in the eye or ear might make them let go.
How satisfying must it have been to shoot that mofo in the head.
The finger-up-the-bum trick seems impractical, as you are the wrong end and probably have limited movement.

A serious point , I have to deliver to an address where the owners appear to have inherited a large and scary- looking Alsatian.
On Saturdays previous when I have had sign- fors or parcels their young children have answered the door , the parents presumably having a well deserved lie-in.Such youngsters are not going to be able to control such a large dog.
Am I within my rights to just post a notice left card on H & S grounds ?

I wouldn't even attempt to deliver, I would inform the Union and managers on H&S grounds as there is no control measures in place to minimise risk.

If you feel" at risk"Then do not call at that address . If an incident occurs and you were aware of a possible risk ,you might be deemed as culpableWessex wrote:A serious point , I have to deliver to an address where the owners appear to have inherited a large and scary- looking Alsatian.
