Six bus routes run by the Royal Mail which collect mail then ferry people in isolated areas of Kent are being axed.
The firm operates nine bus services which take people into and out of towns but after 31 August, only three will remain in Gravesham and Sittingbourne.
The buses being axed serve villages in the Canterbury and Maidstone areas.
Kent County Council said it had offered to increase its subsidy of the services but Royal Mail said the increasing cost of the routes made them unsustainable.
KCC cabinet member for transport Keith Ferrin said: "Most of the passengers are pensioners and I offered to increase the Kent post bus subsidy in an effort to keep all the services going but Royal Mail would not agree."
