Health & safety rep, whats involved ?

Another postie senior to me has also showed an interest and i am not to sure i want to get into a ballot situ so iam going to hold back and see what happens for now

You could of course (do a Tony) by stealing the march on your colleague by getting your nomination in to your Branch for the vacant position of health and safety rep with the signatures of a proposer and seconder poste haste. Just because the other postie is senior to you doesn't mean that he or she will make a better representative than yourself, and of course if they see your nomination for the position is already up on the union notice board they may have second thoughts about applying for the post themself. They may also not wish to go through a ballot process as well, as there are no guarantees that they will be the successful candidate. It boils down to the fact that you either want the position or not.

I already do a couple of extra things in the office and i have a busy year coming up at home. I did speak to the other guy and his not 100% either We talked about sharing the roll but iam not sure if the CWU would be up for that.

Going to sit back for now and see what happens.

Yes it can be a thankless task, but it can also be very productive and worthwhile. You can make a difference in your office. From the usual every day housekeeping,strapping, pouches, trays,left lying about. To making sure vans, trolleys, pouches are fit for there purpose. Your CWU, H and S rep Visits your office get her number and talk to him /her.

I do think i could make a difference at our place as things are WRONG.

Such as fire extinguishers are blocked by yorks on the bank and wheeled barrows (the green sprung ones) are still being used with both lower support bars being snapped off

Our rep is back from his hols next week and i will have a word and see if something can be done with both me and the other guy.

Where I work the H&S reps get more done than the IR reps. Give it a go nothing to lose.

If you like banging your head against a wall and talking to people who dont give a toss go for it, on the other hand if you like the satisfaction of knowing you have got something done about H&S (it can happen) and you want to further your career I managed to get as far as a Occy Health Diploma which has come in handy since getting medical retirement then go for it.

I am a Health and Safety Rep. and i find that Management ignore issues so i always need to confirm every issue with an e-mail and keep a copy, but management when faced with any issue raised will try to say the H&s REP. DID NOT RAISE IT AS AN ISSUE. Staff will moan when you mention over filled Yorks Trays bags etc. to which my reply is 1. you hurt yourself and go sick you can get a stage warning. 2. If you do the job correctly without the shortcuts how can management cut hours.

Well done to you brother and the reasons why it is important to put things in writing to Management whether via email or typed letter format are quite simple.

The reasons why "putting it in writing" is important include:

* The SRSC Regulations entitle safety representatives to put things in writing, and require employers to respond in writing.

* Your copy of the report, letter, memo to management, or record of a meeting is evidence that the problem has been brought to the employer's attention.

* Members, via union notice boards, and copies of correspondence, can see that the union is active, and know what points the union is putting on their behalf.

* If problems do not get resolved, and higher management has to be brought in, middle management failure to act can be pinpointed.

respect is earned not a given and certainly shouldnt be earned by someone advising people to ignore h+s when they are a h+s rep
