Guernsey Post axe 10% of delivery staff

Guernsey Post is cutting 10% of its delivery staff.

The number of men and women who deliver the mail will be reduced by nine, from 85 to 76 in the coming weeks.

The cuts will be made through a programme of voluntary redundancies and by not replacing staff as they leave.

The move comes on top of the 12 administration jobs axed recently.

The number of actual deliveries made each day will also be reduced.

Guernsey Post Chief Executive Boley Smillie said: "We are reducing the number of deliveries that we have have on a daily basis. Not the frequency, so we'll still deliver over six days. We're still expecting the States to have a debate about that in the future. But simply the drop in core mails means there's not enough mail to cover the delivery structure that we're got now so we're reducing the head count there."

The announcement comes on the day Guernsey Post asks the regulator for permission to put up the price of posting a small letter to the UK from 45p to 47p. A large letter would go up from 58p to 61p.

If approved, those hikes would come into force from 1 August this year. It is all linked to the amount of money the Royal Mail in the UK charges for its delivery services.

However, Guernsey's many bulk mailers could be the real winners. Guernsey Post is launching what is called a "reinvigorated Downstream Access service". It means they have found a company which can get parcels from A to B for less money than Royal Mail is charging.

It is now in the hands of Guernsey's Office of Utility Regulation to decide whether these changes are in everybody's interests.
