Hi Guys
I've taken out a 3-month redirection but I have an issue with the labels. The labels only have my new address on and not my name, which I thought was odd given the redirection is specifically for my name only. I'm living in a shared property and my mail has been accidentally opened by others on one occassion due to no specific name on the front of it.
I phoned Royal Mail Customer Services and the Advisor said he would e-mail the Sorting Office manager to ensure the labels are placed further down to ensure my name is visible on the enclosed letter. I was told this was the correct procedure they should be following and they don't print names on redirection labels. Is this correct?
Suffice to say 11 working days later and the service had deteriorated. As well as the nameless labels obscuring my name, they are being applied to my mail with no care and attention, and arriving torn and partially missing on some days. I have put a formal complaint into Royal Mail online, received an automated reference no. and a promise of contact within 5 days.
Could anyone clarify how these labels should be applied?
Thanks.

Re: Redirection Labels
Label should be placed so that Orginal name on the mail item is showing and label just below to obscure address. But if more than 3 items we are advised to place in redirection bag which has no name on it.
They have recently changed the labels gum levels. They used to be fully gummed on the reverse but now there is just 3 thin bars. As a postie getting redirections for delivery on my round I have noticed an increase in damage to the labels and even them coming off on rare occasions. Sometimes the labels appear to have been reapplied.
Oh and another related cause is that RM give very little time allowance for redirections, if any, and with our official work rate now required to be 100% (BSI) during the whole working day (75 - 80% for most other companies) people are pressurised to get out on delivery ASAP and small housekeeping items like this sometimes are not done as well as perhaps they should be.
Yes I can confirm the redirection labels do not display names.
Are you the only one at the address getting a redirection - if so then your companions should not be opening it as its quite evident that its a redirection. The bottom line of the label has information such as orginating office and date of expiry. You could advise them check more carefully and not open it.

The old address and NOT the name should be covered by the redirection label. Perhaps it's worth going to the Callers Office at your local Delivery Office tomorrow and asking to speak to a Manager because of serious problems with your mail, or have a word with your postman if you can catch him and he's a regular on your round. Good luck.

Sometimes when you're placing stuff in those cellophane redirection bags I always write down whatever family name followed by 'family', as there are no names on those redirection labels, yet...
I'm now wondering why the recipient's family names are on the international redirection labels, but not on the local variety.

We posties do things differently, but we still get shot at!

Wow, many people on here appear to be having a rant and a rave about nothing.
I value my job so I wouldn't dare post comment on this forum regarding any sympathy towards your situation.
Business redirections have names on ... perhaps customer services could help.
Opened/torn mail can often be a sign that it has been accidentally delivered to the source redirection address.
Any problems are best sorted informally by calling into you local Delivery Office. Explain the problem and probe for a temporary solution until they get Customer Services to fix it. Don't take no for an answer but be polite and focus on getting a result. Also note that the problem is usually at the source Delivery Office, i.e. where you have moved from.
Fair due to RM, we get regular motivation and checking of the redirection service and they do emphasise its importance but it is a difficult thing to get right. There is lots of room for error (checking family names, dates, wrong address slot, wrong stickers, non-specific details etc) and all this is at the end of a few hours monotonous labour before we deliver the mail. It is often a rushed process but we do it as best we can and if the problem filters down to the posties we will go out of our way to fix it, if not just to stop us looking stupid!

Re: Redirection Labels
It's annoying when people cover up the name with a sticker. I've got a couple of customers who have moved, then moved again. Their (old) house gets these stickers blocking the name, so I have to peel it off to see if it needs to be redirected.
I have at least two redirections with names on the stickers. At least one is international. When it's a family move, I find myself putting a 'John Smith' sticker on a letter meant for 'Mary Smith'. It's still better than no name though.
I also have noticed far less 'sticky' on the backs of the stickers. Not good, but at least it helps when I have to peel them off.
Another thing about these stickers. They have the previous duty number on, but not the new one. When you have loads of redirections to other duties in your office, it's hard to remember what duty it's for. Sorters won't have this problem, but part timers like me who don't do sorting don't know all the streets of all the duties. I have to write the new duty number on the sticker.

I've got one of those too, but rather than peeling the sticker back I now know if it's from one delivery office it's to be redircetyed, if it's from another it's not.NewPostieUK wrote:It's annoying when people cover up the name with a sticker. Re: Redirection Labels
Thank you all for your input, especially confirming what the correct process with these labels is. Having already e-mailed Customer Services I shall wait for their reply before I pop down to the Sorting Office to have a word with them.

Re: Redirection Labels
Customer Services finally got back to me and said they would contact the Delivery Office again but I've heard nothing back since and the problem persists. 30days today since I logged the complaint, so I've asked the Escalated Customer Resolution Team to take over the complaint. It's frustrating to have to keep chasing them like this!
