Yodel is to use more owner-drivers and third party couriers as part of plans to streamline its operation following the acquisition of DHL Domestic last year, Roadtransport.com can reveal.
In an exclusive interview, Yodel chief executive Jonathan Smith explains how the company will move away from the use of full-time HGV and van drivers, putting hundreds of jobs in the firing line.
He says: "DHL domestic traditionally used local courier partners and subbies for its B2B work, while HDNL had fixed drivers for its core B2C market. However, since the merge, we are finding the bulk of customers swaying towards to the DHL flexible delivery option, because these drivers can offer more delivery options and a local level of communication.
"There will definitely be a push to use more self-employed couriers to meet the ever-increasing demands of customers."
As revealed last month, the parcel giant, owned by billionaire businessmen Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, is axing up to half of its 120 depots and four of its eight hubs, leaving some 1,500 employees at risk of redundancy.
Smith confirms hubs in Bristol, Hams Hall, Leeds and Manchester will definitely shut as part of the shake up. He adds that consultations have started with a number of its 120 service centre points over proposed closures where there are HDNL and DHL sites in close proximity.
Yodel was created after the merger of HDNL and DHL last year.
