Driver unhurt after lorry hits Epsom bridge

MORNING commuters in Epsom found the town virtually gridlocked after a major road was closed on Friday when a lorry struck a bridge.

The City Link vehicle toppled over as a result of the incident, which took place on the B284 Hook Road, between Chase Road and the A24 East Street, just after 5am.

The driver was unhurt but the lorry remained stuck at an angle underneath the bridge.

Joe Beadle, who was at his home on Chase Road when he heard a loud bang, said: "Lorries are always clipping the bridge because drivers don't seem to realise they need to be right out in the middle of the road to get through.

"The driver got out and didn't seem to be hurt, apparently he swerved to avoid an animal maybe a fox or a cat."

Another resident added: "They have only just replaced the bridge up the road with a flat one rather than an arch, this one was next to be done.

"The new bridges have more space all the way across so it looks like the accident would not have happened if it was under the new bridge."

The road was due to re-open around lunch time on Friday (May 13) and shortly after 10.30am workers began the arduous task of removing thousands of parcels that had fallen from the curtan-sided lorry as it tipped over.

A spokesman for City Link said:“We can confirm that at 05:10 this morning, a City Link articulated vehicle driven by an agency driver was involved in a collision with a railway bridge on the B284 Hook Road in Epsom.

"No other vehicle was involved.

"Police were called to the scene and City Link is currently assisting with their enquiries."
