Hi,
Have just started work at my local RM depot. Went through the recruitment process online. The thing is, I've been given a full time 40hr contract for 6 months. And as far as i can tell so far, I'm pretty lucky to have achieved that!!
So whats the deal, do most people work 25hrs?
I'm assuming the 6 month contract of employment is some kind of probationary period, or should i expect to be looking for work again in 6 months time.
Any help or tips form some experienced members would be truly appreciated, feeling a bit out of depth at the mo.
Cheers

Kudos for getting 40hrs! Practically unheard of.
Now it depends on your office and if they are going through a revision as to whether you will keep the 40hrs or even your job.
Get hold of the rep or someone in the know as to where bouts your office is for staff/revisions ect.
And welcome,see here for tips...

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I thought i did well getting 40 hours after a few months by going for a very unpopular walk.
40 hours immediately is unbelievable. Well done.

The trouble is, and don't get me wrong I'm chuffed to have got it, but you just cant plan anything. It just feels very insecure at the moment. Is that a pretty accurate first impression??

Privatisation will most likely remove the last of that feeling of job security that used to be the most important selling point of this job.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Crikey, we haven't had a new starter with a 40hr contract for about 20 years, even if it is only for 6 months !
Don't get me wrong, i'm pleased for you, but i'd be very surprised if it was renewed after the 6 months has expired. It's more likely to be replaced with a reduced contract for between 20 and 30 hours, and then only if you keep your nose clean. So be prepared for a drop in hours and income in 6 months time, but until then, good luck
