Polish Post delays restructuring plans

Jerzy Jozkowiak, the newly appointed chairman of Poczta Polska has decided to delay the restructuring of the national postal service, citing concerns that savings that were to made from the move may not be as much as previously thought.

The restructuring of Poczta Polska was to include the laying off of around 5,000 postal workers as well as turn 669 post offices into postal agencies, which would be found in shops and petrol station forecourts.

Postal workers protested in March as a result of the planned redundancies.

However, Jozkowiak has decided to forego the restructuring, telling Dziennik Gazeta Prawna that the profits gained from such a move are not so certain as previously thought.

Earlier, Poczta Polska’s plans to lay off workers and shut down the post offices estimated a saving of 200-300 million zloty (50-75 million euro) annually.

Before the plans are undertaken, however, the financial situations of 3,300 post offices are to be audited, with future decisions being taken on the basis of the new figures, Jozkowiak stated.

The fate of the post offices will be decided upon in Q3, 2011, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna informs.
