SECOND-RATE

As part of its long-term suicide plans, the Royal Mail now wants to put the bulk of postal deliveries back to the afternoon, with no deliveries at all before 10.30am. Among the excuses bleated out for this latest non-service is a European directive limiting mail trucks, among other heavy lorries, to 56mph.

How pathetic. A century ago, when central London enjoyed 12 posts a day, letters were ferried from town to town in horse-drawn mail vans, or on the Puffing Billy.

On top of its proposed apology for one solitary daily post, the Royal Mail wants to jack up the price of a second-class stamp yet again.

What a nerve. Instead of calling it a new second-class rate, why don't they call it a new second-rate class?

And the population of London a century ago was what and how many where literate enough or wealthy enough to send letters? I think if you compare volumes of mail handled then to now you'll see a huge difference. Our postal service is still the absolute best in the world and I've lived all over so feel qualified to comment! British postal workers work harder and for less than their counterparts in Europe or the US. We should be proud of our record and NOT allow business men who are only interested in (yet another) fast buck to decimate the service.

I thought it was the Daily Mirror that exposed the pensions scandal
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
