Postmen in Luxembourg are unhappy

The postmen in Luxembourg are angry: believing that they have been betrayed by the leadership of national postal service P&T, they are planning various protest actions.
Don't be surprised if, by the end of April, you have stopped receiving your mail.

Although, last December, the postmen of Luxembourg reluctantly accepted the planned liberalisation of the P&T, due to be implemented on January 1 2013, they now say they feel they were hoodwinked by management.
What's the problem?

P&T has proposed a rejig of the postal service, particularly the distribution of letters, which doesn't meet the needs of the workers union. "We were promised that working conditions will not suffer. Today we feel betrayed," union chairman Eugene Kirch said yesterday.

The future fate of distribution couriers particularly worries the union, as they have no status as members of staff. Hired to work a 30 hour week, they will not be able to receive a salary of more than 1,300 euros, but will have to tour 1,500 houses, three times as many as they currently distribute to.

Protests, maybe, but no plans to strike...

Today, P&T manager and economy minister Jeannot Krecke will have one last chance to convince the union by offering alternative options. If nothing is done within 14 days, Eugene Kirsch said he definitely would not rule out industrial action.

But he confirmed that a strike is not yet on the agenda. "Our action will not apply to citizens. We are committed to ensuring that the postal service continues to function flawlessly," he said.

It remains to be seen though whether this will ring true after the conversation with Krecke later today.
