having already gone through a privatisation i feel i can give a few pointers as to what may happen. firstly we will see the axing of saturday deliveries,this may look to a lot of our peeps to be a benefit,however think of the number of delivery staff who would loose their jobs, 1 in 6 at a guess.and dont forget a days less processing will be needed. zonal charging will be introduced rm and tnt have already sought permission from the regulator for this to happen, and it was granted, part time working will become the norm,just look at the tnt set up,all grandfather rights will dissapear.present pay rates will apply but any new owners will after six months have the right to re-negotiate contracts.moya greene has just left the canadian post to take up her position with rm,just look at the turmoil they have been left in,sickness payments are a real issue in canada post,strike action is under consideration as i write. signs of forthcoming privatisation are the amount of money being spent by the company for the benefit of the new owners, thousands of vans bought for park and loop,which at present is not successful, new uniform for all, however i'm not sure it will be the right colour.finally pension.the government will benefit from the existing assets,reputably some 23billion, the taxpayer will take care of the deficit.

I think a new owner would soon try to get out of the USO, citing European practice, and move to deliveries every other day, or possibly even weekly for more remote areas.

Just got back from a Saturday shift. We 'absorb' mail Mon-Fri, for which we operate job & go all six working days. Today, Saturday, because a manager (currently on holiday) did not set enough staff to deal with the rounds we were forced to absorb or were told we would have to remain until the end of the shift. The goalposts don't just change, they move whenever a manager sees fit to do so. When I registered my dissatisfaction the DOM (yes, not the line manager) told me I'll be getting myself sacked. Nice. OK I didn't use the best language but then again I was extremely frustrated by the situation, especially as it was dumped on us JUST BEFORE we were due to go out.
Privatisation? It's coming so bring it on, the managers will be dumped in their droves. We have one manager you might call averagely good (coincidentally, the one who set this weeks' rota so far from perfect), the rest range from poor to utterly apalling and none stint from falling back on the old bullying tactics if that's what they see as their only course. We will soldier on, getting made redundant, sacked on spurious charges (you know it's already happening) and the service will go to rack & ruin. RM is, to all intents & purposes, finished. Glad I don't rely on it for my pension...
SO really, anyway you look at it we, the staff, the backbone of a soon-to-end excellent service, the people who genuinely care about the customer, are stuffed. We will be stuffed whichever way we turn. Stuffed, stuffed & stuffed again. Better get used to it, if you aren't already.

When we are privatised,my understanding is we won't have to depend on Royal Mail either for our pension as the Government will be footing the bill.

Dont be too sure of that.
The new owners will either offer everyone a sum to change their contracts to lower pay, terms etc. or sack everybody and re-employ on different contracts.
I've seen it happen.

I've seen it happen. what will happen with the union if gets privatised, wil it cease to exist??

stivell as far as I am aware the delivery span on stand alone is 3 and half hours so they cannot make you do extra. we have the same prob in our office at times. If no volunteers other managers do the deliveries
