Campaign against Royal Mail privatisation

Western Isles SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, has welcomed the commitment delivered by delegates at the SNP campaign conference this weekend that the SNP will campaign for the UK Government to abandon Royal Mail privatisation plans.

This commitment comes as the Scottish Government announces a £1 million Post Office diversification fund for 2011/12.

Alasdair Allan commented: “Nowhere are postal services more important than in remote and rural areas like the Western Isles, where many vulnerable communities depend on them for local services. The services that these Post Offices provide are far too important to be allowed to be broken up and sold off.

“The privatisation of Royal Mail has always presented huge dangers to the continuation of the universal service obligation which ensures that places like the Western Isles get letters delivered at the same rate as on the mainland.

"The Scottish Government has shown the way forward with its commitment to helping small businesses and post offices throughout Scotland. The existing Post Office diversification fund has helped many businesses diversify and this welcome new investment will ensure many more of our valued local post offices will have a real future.

“The UK government should now abandon their ill-conceived proposals and work towards maintaining a strong Royal Mail in the public sector. If they do not, they risk undermining the universal service, and that is in nobody’s interest. I welcome the commitment made by the SNP this weekend to campaign with our local communities against these unwanted proposals.”

Well mail is never on time, sometimes it turns up at 4.20, completely unacceptable when you phone to make a complaint you're met with attitude, My mail then from then didn't turn up for about a week after making a complaint.... was that punishment? I run a small company and if i didn't repair the product by a certain time they wouldn't come back to me, privatisation will give competition where goals of getting you're mail on time would be a prioity.

At the moment, the customer has to suffer, 20 years ago mail turning up at 4:00pm would have been unthinkable.

I wonder it you supported our Unions call to defend postal service in 2007 and 2009 - IN both of those disputes we warned customers that there would be less collections, earlier last collections, later mail and reduced services all in the name of modernisation. However, I am guessing from the tone of your post you believed the Daily Mail and Sun who ran a campaign which ignored the main points of the dispute and highlighted only the pay claim. :hmmmm By the way most delivery routes are becoming longer over the next few years and some of those duties will be leaving their office later, in a few years 4pm delivery will seem pretty good. If you are affected by these changes please remember that it is managements decision when duties are allowed to leave, and its the Directors and Executive Officers policies that are driving these changes, not your humble postman/postwoman.

Oh and your right 4.pm delivery is unacceptable most if not all posties would agree with you on that one.

Competition from who exactly?
The final mile delivery of mail is a loss-making exercise...it always has been and it always will be.
It was and is subsidised by the rest of the operation so where will the competition to deliver mail come from when the more profitable parts of the operation are in private hands.
I'm afraid like most of those that see privatisation as a cure-all you show a complete lack of knowledge in the subject matter.
Privatisation will mean that instead of getting your mail the next day at 4.20pm you will in fact be lucky to get it the next day...profit will be the only priority.

The ruling middle class, which ludicrously believes itself to be God's gift to business, will inevitably wreck what little is now left of a once-fine institution.
We will all wake-up one morning in the very near future, and we'll be thinking, "I hope there's a delivery of mail this week."

Next day delivery will cost an absolute fortune, and if the idiots in charge are anywhere as incompetent as the idiots currently botching things up, you still, despite the cost, will not be able to rely on it. :cuppa
Mystic Meg I am not, but the writing is on the wall for all to see, and in letters that were never bigger. :cuppa

Typical "if.but and maybe" member of the general public borders.
Always ready to moan, always ready with an excuse, never ready to fight to protect the publc services...until it's too late and the service is gone.
Then they come out fighting.....sorry moaning a bit louder. :cuppa

Royal Mail customers:We don't want to strike!
A few years back Royal Mail ceased the 2nd delivery and you now only get one, but the truth is Royal Mail did not stop the 2nd delivery they cancelled the 1st.

We now start our rounds at the time that we started the 2nd delivery years ago and now, Royal Mail want even later start times. So while today, if you're one of the lucky ones, you might meet your postman before you go to lunch, you will soon be meeting him just before dinner. We are aware that this causes big problems for businesses all over the UK more especially those that work from home.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Excellent first post.
Fewer deliveries especially in rural areas.
Worse terms and conditions will mean a higher turnover of staff and a worse service.
Didn't we post a profit again?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Royal Mail will IMPLODE IN A FEW MONTHS TIME!
EU legislation supported and introduced by our own puppet regime in Westminster has paved the way for any Tom, Dick or Harry to cream off ALL of Royal Mail's profit making capability, while forcing it at gun point to deliver the total loss making bit.....DELIVERY... which makes NO MONEY!
How many of these 'companies' are parent owned by foreign ones? What was once pure profit for our treasury is now finding its way into the pockets of European and foreign companies and cartels.
Result, = EU legislation means that our country and Royal Mail is proof, that we are hemorrhaging money by the skip full every hour of every day.
WE CAN NOT SUSTAIN THIS! THIS IS ECONOMIC WAR DRIVEN BY POLITICAL IDEOLOGY!
IF WE ARE TO STOP OUR SELVES ENDING UP LIKE GREECE, PORTUGAL AND IRELAND WE MUST LEAVE THE EU, BUT IN THE MEAN TIME WE MUST STOP COLLABORATING WITH OUR ENEMIES!
IT'S TIME TO STOP HANDLING DSA MAIL, especially that which is foreign owned. Make them deliver it if they collect it! OUR OWN UNION ARE NOT BLAMELESS EITHER! THEY TOO ARE COMPLICIT IN COLLABORATING WITH THE PUPPET REGIME OF THE EU IN BRINGING IN THE CHANGES THAT WILL KILL ROYAL MAIL!
DON'T BE SURPRISED WHEN THOUSANDS ARE MADE REDUNDANT AND OUR TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CANCELED THROUGH EMERGENCY LEGISLATION FROM THE EU!
PONTIOUS PILATE WOULD BE A BETTER JUDGE OF THE SITUATION! :vcfo :dcfo :ncfo :evil/mad
