Door to Door Madness?
Am I the only one that finds the new system of door to door delivery items completely and utterly frustrating and unjust? Pre 2010 and beyond at least you got paid a commensurate rate for your delivery call workload and also pro rata to the size and weight of the items. We were not happy doing it, but there was an element of fairness to it. ie, if you had a big walk therefore it took longer to prep and deliver so you were paid accordingly. I still can't see how a Union that I went on strike for, could roll over and play dead on such a straightforward and important earnings related issue. Since our Office walk revision, if the mail is heavy, and you started on time, took your breaks and did everything to the book, you cannot complete your delivery in the allocated time. Let alone throw in one sixth of your door to doors! If you leave a sixth for your cover duty to throw in - forget it! It just doesn't happen. This is just a general moan re door to door items in general. My next one is more specific.
I now come to the subject of "targeted" (Ha, ha, ha, ho, ho, ho!) door to door marketing to the customer. I fully accept that door to door marketing is a vital part of RM's business but surely, their customers should have their marketing accurately targeted by RM? My walk is predominately local authority properties around 75%. This week I received 5 items of d2d to be delivered, 3 of which were double glazing companies. I had no problem with putting them into the 25% of private residences and, having done my walk for several years, into the people who had bought their council houses. I did have a problem with delivering them to the others where the council have been renewing windows and doors over the past two years. Much as some of my people would like to have a bespoke conservatory, the technical constraints of fitting one to a third floor flat - let alone getting the council to agree to one, would preclude this. I spoke to my DOM about this and he was initially sympathetic and could see the logic of my concerns and said that he would broach the subject at the DOM's meeting. Next morning, he said that he had been told that I had to deliver to all delivery points. I find this personally insulting to my integrity as my customers postman, they look at you as if you were stupid when you deliver such irrelevent rubbish. Couldn't our salesteam use the information from our geo route computer systems to assist potential door to door customers to more accurately and economically plan their marketing campaigns? We pay lip service to our Green credentials, but this waste of print, paper, transport and man delivery and prep time beggars belief. I thought that our illustrious new Chief Executive wanted to maximise our efficiency and utilise our time more effectively???? Let alone make it's delivery staff a laughing stock in certain delivery situations! Is it really a case of you will do as your told regardless and beggar your conscience and own integrity? At least it keeps the recyclers and landfill busy! How sad!

I don't look at them. I couldn't tell you what the 4 door to doors I delivered today were for. Could have been windows, Sky, Asda or Durex, I just don't waste my time looking. I get paid to put one through every door so I do.PostBug wrote: This week I received 5 items of d2d to be delivered, 3 of which were double glazing companies.

Same here, I don't care if they're for escort agencies, sex toys or sexy underwear I just deliver them.NewPostieUK wrote:I don't look at them. I'm wondering if the ad bars will come up with the above list because on mine I've got adverts for double glazing.

There was a clue given in the CWU Foundations for a new delivery model from March 2009.PostBug wrote: I still can't see how a Union that I went on strike for, could roll over and play dead on such a straightforward and important earnings related issue.
Shorter Working Week
Aim to reach 35 hours (Net) over a set period.
Consider what the union is prepared to offer. Door-to-door and monthly pay are potential bargaining chips.

Re: Door to Door Madness?
Well as they are now supposedly live mail we have no choice in the matter..
I use Monday and Tuesday to get rid of the crap as they are usually fairly quiet days.. this helps out with the banking of hours the bosses seem to be awfully keen on as regards O/T
I do however find it a little amusing to deliver British Gas D2D's in villages without mains gas, and also Severn Trent Water leaflets in Thames Water territory.
It seems to me that RM are as happy to take the money from these suckers, as the companies are to pay their shoddy marketing staff!
POSTIES/PEOPLE WITH COMMON SENSE to run RM... it's a service not a business!!!!!

Re: Door to Door Madness?
It is no doubt cheaper to blanket an area with D2D's than direct mail a large % of the area.
Money for the business, work for us,yadda yadda.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Couldn't RM be done by whoever for misrepresenting a potential market to a customer?

Are you sure they have? The RM staff taking the bookings wont know jack about any given delivery route. Its up to the customer to decide where they want their leaflets going then decide which comapny they will use.
As previsouly mentioned it may well be cheaper to go down the DTD route.

Re: Door to Door Madness?
Why RM give them the opportunity of targeting specfic post code sector - in my section we can have 3 or 4 different assortments of D2Ds for the walks. This week some have 3 - a few have 6 and the majority have 4. If they are a good marketing company then they will have a database which helps them target their potential audience and it will save them money.gundog140 wrote:5-%?POSTMAN wrote:It is no doubt cheaper to blanket an area with D2D's than direct mail a large %

If they don't then let them waste money on RM as it DOES help pay our wages. If RM want me to deliver 12 - 15 D2Ds like they do in Canada then I'll do it - RMs responsibility is to provide me with the tools to deliver whatever they want me within the hours they pay me, if they underestimate or overestimate it then they can manage the consequences.
