Re: badge
When the new style gold badges came out in the 1990s, I point blank refused to wear mine. The reason? Well, it called me 'Dave' instead of my preferred 'David'. I stamped my feet and would not wear it, nor hand in my lovely red enamel badge. In true Royal Mail style, they gave up asking. So I still have them tucked away in the loft.
When we were sent to the uniform stores to collect our kit (as new recruits in 1989), I asked if there was any chance of having my Grandad's old number, 403 NH. The old boy in the stores did some checking and found that a postman in one of the SPDOs had it, so gave me 414 NH instead.
In recent times, when those horrid ID card things came in, I refused to accept mine until they re-did it with David on it, having been on A/L when they asked what we wanted on them. I got my way in the end.
As for where the old badges went, I suspect that they were melted down. Some were made of brass, though mine were silver coloured.
