Hi to everybody,

I'm starting as a postie on Monday and thought I'd check in on here and get involved and get some advice.

Something on my mind is promotion and prospects. Don't get me wrong, I think the posties job is very respectable but it's not something I can see myself doing forever and I was wondering what Royal Mail is like in terms of promotion. Is there any chance of becoming a manager and moving up the ladder someday or is it hard to break into management?

Other than that I'd appreciate some general advice regarding my duties as a OPG.

Yes, there's normally opportunities to get into Management. Although not for a while now, as they're having trouble finding jobs for the ones who've lost their current positions due to cuts. Although I wouldn't reccomend going into RM Management, as the lower tiers are basically "piggy in the middle". Because the higher tiers are pushing for unrealistic, and unachievable targets. And the Posties, like us, who're being asked to do the impossible. Some of my Collegues have tried it, and either come back to being Posties, or ended up so stressed, that they've ended up being nasty and vindictive, because they simply can't take the pressure.

If you're still serious about going into Management. I'd suggest getting some Degrees (if you don't already have them), working for several years as a Postie, to get a thorough knowledge of what happens on the front line. And applying for a higher level Management role. That's generally where they get candidates for those roles anyway. The higher level Manager who started off as a Postie, is a dying breed. Which is in my honest opinion, why we have so many problems. Because what looks good on paper, doesn't always work in reality.

Based on your first three posts, for someone on their first experience of being a postie - you have a ridiculous grasp of terminology and process. I think you may have already progressed beyond our humble vocation and ought to concentrate on your real job.
