The Tory and Liberal Democrates have voted to sell off Royal Mail, with only the House of Lords being able to stop the destruction of this much loved public service. Although Labour were against privatisation this time, we need to remember that Labour sought to part-privatise this 350 year old service.

In private hands Royal Mail will transform from a daily universal UK delivery into a post code lottery, where those in cities will be cherry picked and those in rural areas will eventually see the daily delivery of post eroded and eventually wiped out.

A privately owned Royal Mail will no longer be willing to offer a 'one price goes anywhere'. The logic of cost will compel any capitalist company to exert the maximum profit and posting a letter from Lands End to John O'Groats does not fit into this business model.

Separating Post Office Counters from Royal Mail will signal the end of the Post Office, as the two companies will quickly go their separate ways and the interwoven link will fray. As Royal Mail loses a third of it's income from the Post Office both will become more fragile.

Not only have Royal Mail been sold out by the coalition, the British public will be worse off as this public service will be lost forever. Margaret Thatcher sold off our gas, electricity, water and railways, Labour opened the door for privatisation of Royal Mail, education and our health service. It is of no surprise then that Cameron and Clegg want to get their greedy hands on our remaining public services and sell them to their business friends.

We need to continue to oppose the sale of Royal Mail and call for the investment into the Post Office, as communities and businesses rely on this publicly run service. What next - will we see the BBC sold to the likes of Rupert Murdoch? Privatisation of Royal Mail was defeated before (on it's final reading) as Michael Heseltine was forced into retreat because of the public outcry. A Socialist government would make sure the postal service remained 100% in public hands and used for the benefit of all, not for the greed of the few.

Mine already does. Not perfect by any means but they have more socialist leanings than labour any day.

Political parties follow the voters Andy.
People in general have drifted towards centre-right apathy as the general standard of living has increased over the years....less reason to fight/more to lose.
Much as i hate to admit it as a socialist myself but if the Labour Party had stayed completely loyal to it roots it would very much be a third force behind the Lib-Dems and Conservatives.
I know it's not a popular train of thought especially amongst present company...but that doesn't make it any less valid.
What we want and what we get are often entirely different.

In theory you have a good point. But what about the Greens?
They have a lot of Socialist policies, yet they're a rapidly growing force in the British Government. Not yet enough to take power (give 'em a couple more Elections and at this rate, they will be!). But they're getting there.
The fact is, that people's opinions change, depending on their experiences. During the boom, people were greedy. Now that reality is sinking in, and they're paying the price of that greed. They want a credible alternative. And Labour isn't it! It was once. But not any more.

the Labour Party like the Unions , are just a bunch of reformists , they just do deals with the capitalist elite.
the elite concede a few concessions in the good times. in the bad times they take them back and some more amd so the cycle continues. the Elite have to be wary not to over squeeze the middle and working class too much , they dont want to create a Revolutionary atmosphere and here in the UK they do it rather well.
witness the recent flare ups in Tunisia and Greece , the people if provoked will revolt and then its down to how far the Police and Military will go to oppress these revolts.

I like the Greens,i like their policies and the people involved but ......
Rapidly growing force in the British Government?....I'm afraid not...what they are is a party for socialists with a conscience,nice decent people...people i would quite like as friends but a credible force in politics they are not.

Not yet. But look at how they did in the past. They were once, little more than a joke, but now they're gaining seats. True, they aren't getting as many votes as the BNP. But give them time, and they will.
