EU rule will force Royal Mail to go slow

Royal Mail has warned customers their mail may not be delivered until 2pm, and not at all to some flats, because new EU legislation means their delivery drivers have to drive slower.

The new EU Road Transport Directive dictates that Royal Mail vans over seven and a half tonnes have to comply with lower speed limits.

A spokesman from Royal Mail said: "In common with other delivery offices across the country, Kingston Delivery Office needs to make changes to the way it works, including starting deliveries slightly later to take account of mail arriving in the office later due to the new traffic directive. Royal Mail is required by law to comply with this directive."

The Royal Mail has written to customers living in blocks of flats with entry phones, saying that mail delivery is not even guaranteed unless residents alter the timed lock systems allowing postmen to enter the buildings later in the afternoon.

Residents of Wellington Court in Glenbuck Road, Surbiton, have been told by Royal Mail to allow postmen to enter until 2pm, rather than the current midday deadline.

Robert Blevin, 33, a former councillor for Alexandra ward who lives in Wellington Court, is concerned the changes could mean his post will not be delivered.

He said: "This sounds like a poor excuse, an if in doubt, blame the EU' type thing.

"They are suggesting that unless the entryphone system is changed in the next few days, which as a tenant I have no control over, there will be days when my post is not delivered."

Mr Blevin also believes the change to the entryphones will affect security in his block. He said: "We have entryphones to control who enters the building.

"If Royal Mail wants to push the time later, what is the point in having an entryphone in the first place?"

Yet another example of Royal Fail giving a toss about the customers sending the mail. And not giving a toss about those customers receiving the mail.
Seems an awfully long time ago the buzz words were "09.30 restoration" Most people are now lucky to get their mail before 09.30 :d'oh!

I can just see it now. Leighton walks out of RM with as big payoff :mad and then takes his management style to his new job at McDonalds.....

"We need to focus on our customers. We need to look after the people who matter - the big movie studios who run promotions for their latest blockbuster via our retail outlets. So get the punters in, flog those happy meals, and tell them irksome prats who hand over their hard-earned: 'here's your frickin' burgers and fries, don't moan to me about them being delivered late, it's not you that pays my wages, it's Sony Pictures' ....."
