MP: Royal Mail has a bright future

DELIVERING more packages and parcels could save Royal Mail, according to Worcester’s MP.

Robin Walker visited the depot in Wainwright Road, Warndon, and spoke to the local Communication Workers Union (CWU) representative on Friday morning.

While the CWU is against the privatisation of Royal Mail and is worried about what the future holds, Mr Walker is convinced it can survive and thrive.

Mr Walker said while there has been a lot of talk about the decline in the number of letters being sent by post, people have not acknowledged the boom in the number of packages and parcels being shifted due to an increase in the number of people buying goods online.

“The manager was telling me they were expecting their night staff to be dealing with 40,000 parcels and packages, but it was more like 60,000 a night,” said Mr Walker.

As a result, Mr Walker thinks Royal Mail could have a bright future if it invests in its fleet and depots.

“If they can invest in the right areas and look at parcels and packages it will be a more effective business as a whole,” he said.

Mr Walker also tried to allay fears that Royal Mail would no longer provide a universal service, saying it was “right at the heart” of the Postal Service Bill.

The Bill is set to go before Parliament again on Wednesday.
