Solution to sale of Royal Mail

The European Commission has again entered negotiations of the sale of a British institution. The Royal Mail. This is quite legitimate under EU rules on state aid, if illegitimate in the terms of the British constitution.
However I have a pragmatic solution. The poison pill is Royal Mail's £8.7 billion pension deficit, almost exactly equivalent to our no-strings annual overseas aid budget.

Redirect this to the Royal Mail pension fund is option 1. Option 2 is to withhold 50% of UK contribution to the EU, almost exactly this sum.

I offer this solution, without prejudice, gratis, to the trade unions involved, the coalition government and the European Commission.

I read somewhere that the government want to nationalise the pension deficit so that RM's assets can be sold off and privatised. And yet, there may still be a problem with this idea. The people who normally make big bucks from the mishandling of our pensions (hedge fund management, I think?) are none too pleased that they will lose out big time if this were to go ahead. So, it could be that this will never be resolved, well, not at the pace that Vince Cable might like it to go through.
