Anger over postal strike flyer
Exclusive by Clinton Manning, Business Editor 08/08/2007

Union leaders last night blasted Royal Mail for trying to lure staff into becoming "strike breakers" to smash the bitter pay strike.

They said post bosses are offering to smuggle workers into depots and give them minders if they cross picket lines.

In a flyer dished out to mail centres, staff are also offered a transfer to a different office to protect their identity.

The CWU union yesterday branded it a "strike breakers charter" and accused management of dirty tricks. One source said: "It's like a witness protection scheme.

"They're basically offering to move people to a new area and give them a new identity. It shows the underhand tactics of management and the mind-boggling lengths they are prepared to go to."

The row flared as up to 30,000 workers across the country prepare for another 24-hour strike tomorrow night.

The flyer - not on official Royal Mail paper - is headed "Fed up with losing money?"

With a freephone number provided.

When the Mirror called yesterday pretending to be a post worker, a man said: "A lot of people have lost four days' pay. You could work a different shift to normal."

When our reporter said he was worried about being labelled a scab, he was told: "We can arrange for you to work at another office if you prefer."

The current dispute is the worst to hit postal services for 11 years.

Management insist they cannot afford to improve a 2.5 per cent pay offer. The CWU is demanding twice that. Union leaders are also furious about plans to change working conditions and create later start times.

Royal Mail said: "We will do all we can to support any of our people who put the customers first and choose to work during any disruption by the CWU

No shocking news in this story, this has happened before. This time around though Royal Mail are desperate to get people in and have tried any way possible to try and break the strike (except the only way, which is to cut the strings attached to the pay rise we deserve!).

Bit of a joke Royal Mail going on about putting customers first - they stopped caring about the customers a long while back. :cool

They are only worried about the top 10 or 20 bulk posters and not the 65,000,000 members of the public.

So so true - and that has been confirmed time and time again in WTL sessions when we have bought up about the time of delivery for customers. In one sentance they spout how "important customers needs are" and then their actions speak louder than words when they fail the customer.

WE HAVE BEEN TOLD IN OUR OFFICE THAT WE WILL BE STARTING 6-15 IN SEPTEMBER. SILLY ME I THOUGHT THIS WAS ONE OF THE THINGS I WAS STRIKING OVER THAT THE UNION SAID WAS UNACCEPTABLE. OBVIOUSLY I WAS WRONG.

i've got no probs with 6.15 if it were monday to friday. the problem is always gonna be saturdays with the football boys etc. it's this grandfathers rights thing that bugs me. its like the boy who cried wolf. why should we believe this one when they've lied and broken agreements so many times before

Jaffer as far as im aware we will be able to take strike action over the later starts over and above the national strike dates ie we might take an hrs strike at the end of our shifts

I am quite pleased that they are using these dirty tactics. The worst situation would be that they just didn't care at all but because they are trying devious tactics it proves that they can't go on ignoring us forever. All we have to do is hold out, they are getting desperate.

This flyer goes to show that RM will revert to anything to get the backlog down. I'm presuming the backlog must be HUGE and therefore making RM s**t themselves - so they'll try any tactic going to get the backlog down - short of AL/AC helping out of course - they just sit in their offices dictating the next chapter of their soon to be demise.

Said the same thing,Jafferpants, to our dum in WTL about 6.00 starts being put back. When I tackled him about this being one of the reasons we were on strike, all he could come up with was, "it's the law" I'm sick to death of hearing that sentence. Spoke also about this grandfather rights, but I've heard from my area rep, and he say's without an agreement, it's no better than the pay protection idea, as it's still only an offer. RM can turn off the offer whenever they like.......and we know they are capable of that, don't we? :no no :no no :no no

Why the need for these flyers ?
i thought my office was the only one in the country where people were striking as i kept being told that the rest of the country the % working ranged from 60% to 90% ..........apparantly :no no
