Bad weather toll

Yesterday i sent back a street of mail, i deemed to dangerous to walk on. The only way for us to deem households safe when walking is to get the lazy sods who live their to clear the snow or ice and salt/gritt their paths/driveways.

That's assuming they can get any! I learned from my mistakes last year, and got a good supply, in plenty of time. But most of the shops in my area (including Supermarkets) are out of Salt/Grit. And have been for a fortnight. And those that still have some, are running low. Which means that as I bought Grit, rather than Salt. I'm going to have problems if the supplies aren't replenished within the next month or two, as I'll run out of Salt for seasoning.

Last year some of my customers were using cheap cat litter(unused) as grit, seemed to work ok.

On Friday a guy was melting the ice on his driveway with a large industrial Gas Torch. He said he was having to do this because he was having a new Ferrari delivered Saturday Morning. Last year his wife had a top of the range, custom built Mercedes Sports delivered. How the other half live. I told him that Royal Mail was issueing me with a brand new golf trolley to deliver in the snow. I think he new I was taking the p.ss but who cares.

In Southampton, we have some nasty conditions on most pavements and side roads have black ice around my home. Although there is some distance between home and my depot, I'm expecting my walk to be a "mixed bag" of ice/snow/clear pavements, as my walk covers the businesses on the high street plus side roads off it.

The depot does not have enough spikeys and/or chains to issue to anything like the ~250 delivery personnel, including myself.

As you may have guessed by my alias, I normally use a HCT for deliveries, currently the equivalent of just under two trolley loads.

Where do I and other without spikeys/chains stand in these icy conditions, in regard to going out on delivery and repercusions for any accidents?
At what point is it deemed unsafe to use a HCT?

We haven't had any new snow yet but the other week when we had , our trolly deliveries ( we haven't and HCT's yet ) used pouches instead. You couldn't push a trolly in the snow and when it turned to thick rutted ice you can't safely push one either. Slows the job right down but that's RM's problem not yours as for snow chains ( haven't seen any in yrs ) spikeys ( last about 3 days max ) your DIM should have ordered enough in
