The postman always rings the cash till

They say that timing is everything. When it comes to announcing gargantuan bonus payments, perhaps Royal Mail should have thought about that. Alan Cook, managing director of the Post Office, is in line for a £1m bonus - on top of his £250,000-a-year salary - if he completes the unenviable task of closing 2,500 post offices. This at a time when postal workers are already striking over their pay and conditions. And the timing is made even worse by the prior news of the bonus enjoyed by Adam Crozier, chief executive of Royal Mail - understood to be £370,000 on top of his £615,000 salary last year.

Such bulging pay cheques are sure to add fuel to the fire already raging around executive pay, particularly when their jobs involve tampering with well-loved public institutions. Cook's bonus, which was personally approved by Alan Johnson who was trade and industry secretary at the time, has come under particular flak for the fact that it is a direct reward for reducing a public service, rather than improving it. It's not a million miles away from the five-figure ‘performance bonuses' received by Environment Agency chiefs, shortly before the flooding crisis hit the UK.

Cook's task of returning the Post Office to profitability is clearly a tough job, and so should of course be rewarded like any difficult management role. But if such institutions are going to be run like private companies, then they need to work a little on the issue of their PR.

Two different issues

Post by F0zziebear »

Alan Cook works for Post Office Ltd and the bonus relates to that business

The current strike relates to Royal Mail which is a different business.

As for their bonus's, well it's just possible that they have deferred their bonus's and are now getting a larger lump sum. I am not 100% sure on this as haven't been around for some time now so happy to be corrected.

As for size of their bonus, well we would all love a slice of that!

As for the environment agency chieft getting a bonus, I think criticism is a bit unfair. She is given a certain budget to spend. If her budget was cut as it was last year then you can't expect miracles. Also the rainfall was the highest amount on record for that period of time. It is the Government who authorised much of the building on floodplains. Obviously nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman in a senior role, and people having a go! A bit like the Mail making a point that the chief vet is a woman. Who cares? As long as they do a good job.

As for the public having a go at RM Mgmt. I haven't heard anything, the press is barely covering it. It requires all out strike over several weeks to get the coverage and government intervention. The continued rolling strikes are not as mgmt fill in the pieces, at a diminshed quality of service, but few people are feeling the pinch.

Let's see some real balls and go all out! Give Gordon something to think about

Sorry F0zziebear but Post Office Ltd are having strikes as well, although apparently they aren't as strongly supported as the Royal Mail strikes are.

- There was a article in The Mail on Sunday about the Post Office Director sending letters to Postmasters about how compensation could be reduced if they didn't stick to the official line on Closures. There was a bit about Mystery Shoppers being sent round to check that they toed the line. A apology was issued after it was leaked to the MOS of course!.
The Daily Telegraph did a similar story last friday??, Royal Mail Group Board and Senior Mgt was described as Maoist by this left wing socalist rag!. We all know who Chairman Mao is ? :lfo
