Thank you very much for your recent email with regard to EDM 738 on the future of Royal Mail.



I am acutely aware that my colleagues spent a great deal of time in opposition in the search for the best long term solution to the enormous problems at Royal Mail. I fear that a large number of these difficulties have resulted from careless decisions of previous Governments. However I have to accept the wisdom of our experts that the current proposals offer the most realistic prospect for the long term survival of Royal Mail with most of the cherished features that we have fought to defend, not least the universal provision. I particularly welcome the commitment to share ownership for employees of Royal Mail so that they will gain additional advantage from any success of the operation in future.



I had never expected to be on the side of any move to end national ownership of such a key service but I have become convinced that this is the only way to preserve the benefits that we have taken for granted for too long in the mail service.
