Royal Mail plans threaten to end six-day deliveries

at the end of the day this company is still making a working profit , if we take out how much it pays to service the pension ,because of the huge amount of time the company took a pension holiday. I think it costs over half billion too service the loan

Well Jim...a privatised Royal Mail is unlikely to be interested that much in the MTSF agreement so as long as he understands that he will probably walk away with the statutory legal minimum redundancy pay.
Let's see...say he's 40 with 20 years service....that'a whole 19 weeks pay or about £6,800. ...for 20 years service ffs.
I can see them queuing up already.

The powers that run this country/planet are hastingly moving the people into the animal world of Darwin and survival of the fittest.
We are no longer a caring, thoughtful species and we can either fight to regain what our forefathers fought for, or be trod over by those that wield power. That is an excellent point, cos journos print "Saturday deliveries could be lost", cos they assume Saturdays are the "nothing much" day - they rarely work it, their family rarely work it, their mates outside journolism rarely work it.....the majority of people, at least those that count ( ie those that work in offices ) rarely, if ever work Saturdays....but we keep being told that d2ds are the future, nay, they are RM's ( & our ) lifeline, and what advertiser would prefer his mailshot getting delivered midweek, ( with the pressures of work, and kids, paying bills, etc, etc on a customer's mind ) instead of on a Saturday ( when all that might trouble him is the queue in Sainsbury's or Homebase or what shirt to wear to the gastro pub that night )?

Another reason RM want to turn Saturday into a "normal attendance lengthy" day - the only thing about Tuesdays is the high number of SDs....but offer some drivers SA rate to deliver them & Bob's your uncle

Some who want to remove Saturdays from the USO fail to see the bigger picture , yes of course it would be a popular for staff to have Saturdays off but this move is linked to reducing what mail is included in the USO ie what mail has to be delivered every day which will see thousands of more jobs go , especially if only in the future that stamp mail is included in the USO allowing other mail streams to be delivered on the days where Royal Mail or any new owner thinks is more profitable and productive.

You are right most people want 5 day working and most offices have a number of people wanting to get out and take VR. If I was running Royal Mail I would go for 5 day working as its all about profit. We are now ''The Business'' and the old days are not coming back.

This offer isn't on the table for RM, it is being put there as another sweetener for a private buyer. Once we are sold off then the Saturdays may go, along with most full time jobs, it will be staffed mainly by part timers and casuals, monday to friday, because a lot of businesses don't work saturday, a lot that do have their admin closed so no one there to deal with mail any way, and believe me a lot of the public think the mail fairy delivers there post on a saturday, not us.

Sadly, I think it'll be more than just the 6 day deliveries that'll go. We'll have Zonal Pricing soon after Privatisation IMHO, if it goes ahead.

Zonal pricing makes complete sense.

Small price to send a letter in your own Postcode zone.

1 zone away price goes up...2 zones more...3 zones....so on and so on.

Cant really believe RM dont do this.

As I understand it the Zonal Price structure won't be based on precise geographical locations but on the inward volume. Meaning you could send a letter from London to Edinburgh and it would be cheaper than sending one from say Odiham to Fleet.

We will want Saturday off but what if Royal Mail do delivery from Tuesday to Saturday only. Would this be acceptable. (Not for me)

Well one things is for sure, Cameron was tackled at PMQs today about preserving the USO.........he ignored the question and clearly stated that Royal Mail was out on a limb and nowhere to hide
