AN INQUIRY into the potential effect of the Royal Mail privatisation is to be held by the Scottish Affairs select committee in Westminster amid growing concerns that the move could lead to the closure of thousands of post offices.
The government plans have been criticised for failing to include a legislative guarantee on the minimum number and requirements of a post office network.
Fears have been raised that if, as proposed in the Postal Bill, Royal Mail is completely privatised and separated from the post office network it will simply take its business elsewhere or force the post office to shut up to 7,000 unprofitable branches out of the total of 11,500 in the UK.
Scottish Affairs committee chairman Ian Davidson said that his committee would look at proposals which protected the post office network and universal postal service. The committee intends to report by Christmas.
