LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Postal workers are planning a postal picket after hearing that processing services in Lake Charles will be moving to the facility in Lafayette.

The postal workers will be picketing at the post office on Moss Street from 9 a.m. (9:00 24h) to 4 p.m. (16:00 24h) on Saturday.

Postal workers decided to start the picket after hearing that several of the workers may be forced to work in Lafayette as a result of moving the processing services.

Beatrice Harris has been working as a postal processor for years in Lake Charles, and she fears she will be forced to work an hour away from her family and home.

"Our community doesn't deserve this," said Harris. "About 75 of us will be forced to leave and some have already volunteered to go."

Harris also said she is concerned that moving the processing services to Lafayette will only push more money eastward.

"I don't want my tax dollars in Lafayette, I want all of my money in Lake Charles because this is my home," said Harris.

In addition to her issue with the tax dollars, Harris is also concerned with how the change in operations in Lake Charles will affect residents that receive mail.

"I don't know how it will affect the residents and when they get mail," said Harris. "We could very well do the job that we have done for years here in Lake Charles."

7News did contact the U. S. Postal Service about the moving of the processing services. They have not yet returned our calls.
