Wellington posties fear their friendly relationship with the public is at risk after being reminded not to hand mail directly to recipients, their union says.
NZ Post regulations state that all mail must be placed into a letterbox rather than handed to a person, but many posties ignore the rule so they can maintain a personal connection with customers.
Postal Workers Union spokesman John Maynard said Wellington posties were reminded of the policy by NZ Post in the past few weeks and specifically told not to hand mail over at the letterbox, even to people they knew.
This had angered many workers, who were frustrated they had to behave in a manner they found rude.
"Posties have told us in quite strong terms that they feel very unhappy and very uncomfortable with the instruction to put it in a letterbox right in front of the people they were just talking to in first-name terms," Mr Maynard said.
"A valuable part of the job for posties is the contact with the people. Everybody regards the postie as a friendly person in the neighbourhood."
The union had discussed the problem with a representative from the NZ Post Wellington office yesterday and expected it to be raised at a national level.
Posties understood concerns about security but wanted the ability to use their discretion, Mr Maynard said.
"They want to maintain the good relationship. The person standing waiting by the box, they might be talking about the weather or something, the sports game on Saturday night, and in the conversation they will hand over the mail - now that's a postie using their discretion."
NZ Post postal services chief executive Peter Fenton said the policy had been in place for more than 10 years.
The obligation was to deliver the envelope or package to the address, not directly to the person.
He was aware some posties handed over items directly but they would be taking a risk by breaking company policy, he said.
"We have had occasions when people have taken mail out of posties' hands who don't have the mandate to accept the product," he said.
