Now if you want cost effectiveness, how about us Subbies take on responsibility for delivering mail and collecting mail in a defined area? With no POL taking a cut, and our ability to provide staff and equipment in a more flexible way, I'm sure this would be an attractive proposition for a privatized RM.

Would that be delivering all mail for the area under the USO or just other PO items when it's economically viable?

Why not items under the USO ?

??
Would you want to deliver all the DSA (for a fixed price) and to every address, every day as well as just the items that come from the PO network?
I'm preparing myself for the zombie invasion, rule number 1 - Cardio
The PO network and RM will be split, so the PO network will essentially be freed from RM.
They'd end up offering more in the way of financial services, in addition to deliveries/collections for other postal carriers.
While RM will either end up part of TNT or whoever, or a private company freed to compete with all other postal companies as well as deliver their final mile mail. It would free RM to negotiate individual contracts rather than stick to fixed regulated prices.
The old model of a Post Office with an attached store - where people would go to post their mail, cash their giros, save or withdraw cash etc - and hopefully then also spend in store will change. The PO network is still large, and the government is saving it and funding it, even "mutualising" it (they claim). The RM is a different story.
I strongly believe independece is the key, even if it has to be via stock market flotation. A straight sell off , no doubt at a bargain price in todays market, would just get us absorbed into whoever buys us.
The future doesn't look particuarly inspiring. I'm not scared to work hard, in exchange for a good wage. I know there'll be job cuts, hopefully through natural wastage and voluntary redundancies. And I know the old-style mail market is shrinking. But there's still enough work out there for a free, de-regulated organisation of our size to succeed and profit. We would be both a simple mail carrier for other mail operators (like the current DSA system) while also able to compete on more flexible terms. Door to Door would be part of this of course.
Call it junk mail if you want, but the direct mail business is very important to us (catalogues, leaflets, etc) as well as packets and parcels from smaller businesses and ebayers, etc.
It doesn't have to be as bad as people fear. It depends which way we're sold.
* This is of course unless there's a parlimentary vote on the matter, hopefully a free vote, where Labour with indys, cons and lib-dems could defeat the bill.
Here we go again Can't wait to do twice as much work for half the money and get sacked on a whim or a stage one or a seasonal drop in traffic, all for the greater good of the profit god of course.
Where do you people come from?
PO's will be gone in five years with no subsidy and with a privatised RM switching to the cheapest provider . 90% of PO's don't have the footfall ;position ;sales volumes or physical selling space to compete with other retail rivals in anything outside what is their current niche market. To suggest a golden future lies ahead would be the act of a fool or a liar
Staying with what we have now is killing off PO's. This is a fact. Why do read about so many cases in the Courts, why are Postmasters chucking in the keys? They are being deliberately starved of income as the Group moves transactions away to the Web, and by going direct to our customers, we are doomed if we stay as we are, so the lifeline being thrown to us looks a better prospect than staying where we are. Admittedly not all the pieces are in place yet to enable a smooth transfer, but I believe that will not take long to sort out.
At least we are promised a degree of control over our own destiny so if we go down it will be our own fault, and not as a result of some clowns sitting on the Group Board.
I'm still waiting to hear from all these massive retail arms who are supposed to be queuing up to take on RM products to sell.
If they dont turn up, who will RM use as their retail network?
