Rules regarding mail delivery.

Post by Spmcintyre »

Hey folks,

A customer recently complained that he wasn't getting any mail (He's a shop owner on my delivery).

His shop is never open and the only access point to post letters through is the gap in his shutter which is about 1 metre away from the door and letterbox of the property.

Because of this I had been marking his mail as "No Access" and returning them to sender for around 2 months or so.

My question is, what are the rules regarding this? I've always heard through word of mouth in my office that the mail must pass through the letterbox of the property in order for it to be regarded as secure and delivered.

Can anyone clarify?

Thanks in advance!

I thought if you were having problems accessing a delivery point, you were supposed to inform your manager.
S/he can then contact the customer and try to find a mutually acceptable solution. (Stick it in the gap/leave it in the shop next door/mail collect etc)
RTS should be a last resort.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Some of the (alleged!) door-stepping stories I've heard in my DO would have IB open a field office nearby.
I staged a Roger Moore impersonator festival in my local village. There were a lot of eyebrows raised, I can tell you.

Don't see the problem with just putting them through the gap.

there was a member in the customer section complaining about just that
you cant make assumptions as to whats fine
the gap could mean the mail gets jammed inside the mech when they open

Why would you want to pop something through his letterbox? Thats surely one of the many reasons managers are there. Inform him the delivery point is inaccesible and let him deal with it. If he chooses to write an explanation on inaccesible delivery points then so be it.

Kill off and return to sender as no access. It is down to the customer to have a visible delivery point.

if you pop it in through his "letterbox" he will ask why you didn`t pop his mail through the same "letterbox"

What about when you deliver somewhere with no parking and if the next street is also rammed with cars? How are we supposed to deliver parcels whilst not leaving the van unattended for more than 10 minutes, not parking on pavements or double yellows etc??? Has anyone ever been to the local councils to ask for dedicated postal worker parking spaces? Or some other useful solution because trying to deliver 1 parcel to an area with no parking means other people don't get theirs?

You are allowed to stop on double yellow lines to make deliveries.

I was told if a shop is shut for more than one day say between Christmas and new year and there’s nowhere to post the mail then to mark it rts unless they have a retention in place.

We had the same brief for schools back in summer, like schools have loads of money to pay for a retention. Everyone ignored it and they got their mail when they opened again in September

Only if there is space to do it. Round my delivery round there is roadside parking for the residents, so no double yellows. streets and streets of roadside parking, one way streets and no access to deliver parcels if people are at home....like they are over the xmas holidays.
