Some 50 postal workers walked off the job in Helsinki on Thursday. Members of the Finnish Postal and Logistics Union (PAU) have been under an overtime ban as of midnight Tuesday.
”Our people went home when the employer suddenly announced it was backpedaling on earlier promises by hiring new staff,” says PAU chair Esa Vilkuna.
Postal workers are concerned that a new Postal Services Act could lead to job cuts, as the law would open up the field to competitors. Such concerns, coupled with an expired collective agreement, triggered the overtime ban.
Postal workers' collective agreement with the employers' association TIKLI expired last Friday.
The postal firm Itella employs some 22,000 people.
Thousands of households did not receive their mail on Wednesday due the overtime
