1,000 back union's campaign against Royal Mail privatisation

MORE than 1,000 people have signed a petition by Notts postal workers opposing Government plans to privatise Royal Mail.

Members of the Communication Workers Union's Nottingham and Notts branch collected signatures during four days of campaigning in Beeston and Hucknall earlier this month.

The branch's Keep The Post Public campaign is calling on MPs in Notts to oppose the coalition Government's plans to look into privatising the Royal Mail.

The branch, which represents over 2,500 postal workers across the NG postcode area, claims that such a move could lead to post office closures.


Darren Glebocki, CWU Nottingham and Notts branch spokesman, said: "This level of local public opposition to the coalition Government's plans to break up and sell off the Royal Mail is truly welcomed but not surprising.

"The vast majority of people remain firmly opposed to any plans to break up and sell off their postal services knowing full well this will threaten local post offices, wreck postal services, and lead to higher prices as private companies will maximise their own profits ahead of any sense of public obligation."
