Coalition voters don’t want Royal Mail privatisation, CWU tells Tories

Most Conservative and Liberal Democrat voters overall would prefer Royal Mail to remain in state ownership, according to a new poll released at the opening of the Conservative Party conference.

The YouGov poll for the Communication Workers Union found that 70 per cent of Lib Dem voters do not want to see Royal Mail privatised, and only 16 per cent support it. 42 per cent of Tory voters polled were against, with only 36 per cent in favour.

CWU general secretary Billy Hayes, who unveiled the poll results at a fringe meeting at the Conservative conference in Birmingham, said the coalition should consider alternatives to privatisation.

Deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: “We are not saying that the existing situation is the answer or that the answer is that the Government should keep putting money into Royal Mail. There are other solutions.” No private company would want to take on the “burden” of providing a universal service, he warned.

Business Secretary Vince Cable is committed to selling up to 90 per cent of Royal Mail to a private sector in order to bring in extra investment. Mr Ward argued that Royal Mail could earn an estimated £120 million by charging a fairer price to private mail firms for delivering their packages over the “final mile”.

The poll comes amid mixed messages from the Government on the future of the Post Office. Mr Cable promised that the Post Office would be split off and kept in public ownership when Royal Mail’s delivery business was privatised.

However, in response to a report last week that the Post Office could be turned into a co-operative, a spokesperson said: “There are a growing number of examples of community groups, charities and local people coming together to get Post Office services in their area. We’re fully behind this trend and are considering whether there are other ways that we can further support such groups in the future.”

So the voters don't want us privatised then, well that's a comforting thought .......not that that will cut any ice, as for targeting the 71 most vulnerable seats in parliament............the next election will be in 2014 or 2015 ..........................anyone think we can hold out til then?
