Mail operator TNT has said it will decide in the next year whether to take on Royal Mail by launching a ‘final mile’ delivery service in the UK.
The service would focus on bulk mail such as direct mail. Dutch firm TNT’s planned decision over whether to launch the service has been accelerated by the ongoing strike action at Royal Mail.
TNT has already run trials of a final-mile service in Manchester and Glasgow, and is now looking at a national network.
Chief executive Peter Bakker said: “We expect a decision by TNT over the next 12 months on setting up this activity.â€

TNT
I SAY JOLLY GOOD LUCK TO THE TNT CHAPS! MIGHT TAKE A BIT OF THE JUNK MAIL OUTA MY POUCHES - THE PUBLIC CAN ALL LEAVE THE RE-CYCLING BINS OUT WITH LITTLE SIGNS SAYING 'TNT IN HERE, PLEASE' !!
AND WHO WOULD DELIVER IT - BET THEY ARE HOPING THAT THE INFLUX OF OUR EASTERN EUROPEAN COUSINS WILL BE HAPPY TO EARN SLAVE WAGES, WELL I THINK THAT YER AVERAGE POLE, ESTONIAN, LITHUANIAN HAS A LITTLE MORE INTELIGENCE. TNT WILL HAVE TO PUT THERE PRICES UP, THESE SCAB FIRMS WILL SUDDENLY WANT RM TO TAKE THEM BACK - ON OUR TERMS?
PERHAPS BY THEN WE WILL HAVE A DECENT UPPER ECHELON OF DYNAMIC MGMT - NOT THE USELESS TOSSERS WE HAVE NOW.
OR AM I, AS USUAL IN DREAMVILLE!!!

We should hold the trump card and charge our competitors what WE want, not what PostComm TELL us to. After all, they're using our network, our services, our staff .. so if they ain't happy with our prices they'll have 2 choices. Pay the price, or setup their own network.
It's a business after all, RM and the PO started small and grew bigger, so let TNT, et al, do the same if they desire an "end to end" network, rather than just use our network for the pittance that they're charged.
As said before, i very much doubt any competitor will ever have the infrastructure we have, and the only reason competitors have contracts is because we have it enforced on us by PostComm to what we can charge.

Finale Mile
If they deliver mail as well as Dx do in my area they won't last long. Same as Express Dairies left things on the wrong doorstep.
I thought if they were setting up finale mile it had to be nationwide. They couldn't pick and choose?

If they do set up their own "final mile" networks, they'll only be in the big cities where it'll make a tidy profit for them. Royal Mule will be left with doing all the small out of reach rural areas. And also still delivering TNT DSA crap. They'll have the best of both worlds. Making a killing using their own deliveries in big cities, while still palming off their other stuff onto us at a fraction of the cost.
That is unless Postcom finally realise they're being completely unfair and decide it's time for a proper level playing field.
