THE proposed privatisation of Royal Mail is a backward step, an MP claimed this week.
North Ayrshire MP Katy Clark, right, vowed to vote against the sell-off when the privatisation move came before the House of Commons.
The MP said: “Selling Royal Mail to a company which will put its profits ahead of the service it provides to the public is a massive step backwards.”
Business Secretary Vince Cable confirmed the Government intends to go ahead with the sell-off.
Legislation would be introduced to allow privatisation, he said.
But the MP expressed her disappointment at the proposals saying it would have a serious detrimental impact to the postal service.
She went on: “I believe such a move could lead to higher prices and massive job losses resulting in a poorer service.
“There is a very real threat that in the long term, privatisation could lead to the universal delivery service being put at risk.
“Significant progress has been made in the Royal Mail over the last two years including improvements to the sorting and delivery service.
“The Government should be looking to expand the service rather than putting it in jeopardy.”

Re: MP warns Royal Mail sell-off would be a backward step
KC has been 100% consistent in opposing any sell off under Labour as well as Conservatives.
Lets not forget Mandys plan came to a grinding halt when he had to face our elected MP's in the H of C.
If the CWU is to remain affialted to Labour it needs to fund ways to stop actions of Labour front bench in or out of government are a massive breach of what Labour stands for.
Lovely sounding words and motion at conferences are not enough, we should be able to force through penalties against the Labour front bench in order to stop them dictating and imposing policies that are are not in tune with the ethos of Labour.
