Royal Mail - HSE Inspectors Allocated to Royal Mail Letters Regions:


The Large Organisations Partnership (LOP) project between the HSE and Royal Mail came at the end of the 2009/10 work year resulting in an 'Improvement Plan' that identified several priorities with regard to health and safety performance.

We have been informed that HSE cannot continue with targeting the same level of resources towards work with Royal Mail that they have over the last 6 years due their commitments in other areas. However, some HSE area offices have indicated that they will be continuing with Local Action Plan initiatives via a collaborative approach between Royal Mail, Trade Unions and the LA's. Normal incident and complaint investigations will continue in accordance with the HSE's and LA's own internal policies and procedures. Other routine preventative inspection activities may continue in some areas at the discretion of local HSE/LA offices.
HSE's understanding is that Royal Mail will continue work towards achieving the aims of the Improvement Plan under their own momentum. These aims are to:

* promote further integration of health and safety management systems into everyday work processes;
* achieve improved health and safety performance; and
* to cultivate a stronger safety culture throughout the organisation


Through their interventions with Royal Mail over the last 6 years the LA and HSE Inspectors have continued to provide advice and guidance to Royal Mail on the key hazards associated with their undertaking. As a result, there is an expectation by HSE that Royal Mail should be effectively managing the risks the business creates and also sufficiently monitoring their risk control measures for compliance with health and safety legislation.

In his support for continued joint work between Royal Mail, CWU and HSE, Eddy Tarn, the new Operational Policy Lead Inspector for Royal Mail, has established a network of HSE Divisional Co-ordinating Inspectors. These HSE Regional coordinators aim to monitor the progress of the work Royal Mail has committed to under LOP and other interventions. The intention is for the HSE Regional Coordinators to liaise with each of the 9 Royal Mail Letters Regions in England, Scotland and Wales by acting as the Regional point of contact for Royal Mail and, resource permitting, by attending Regional Health and Safety Committee meetings.

When we were sent out in Sub zero conditions this year for 3.5 hours and what next winter 4.5 hours?

Where were the HSE and more importantly CWU.
iF you dont wear hI viz vest god you are in some trouble , but going going out in unsafe conditions up and down untreated steps on domestics residence is ok by all who do not have to do it !!
