Postal workers revive Royal Mail sell-off fight

POSTAL workers are hitting Hucknall town centre today (Friday September 24) to drum up support for a re-launched campaign to block privatisation of the Royal Mail.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) says the nation's postal service is under threat for the third time in a decade as the coalition government looks to cut costs.

It is feared that plans to break up the Royal Mail and sell off chunks to the private sector will be rushed through.

In response, the 'Keep The Post Public' initiative has been revived. It will ask locals to sign up in support and calls on MPs to oppose any sell-off plans.

The union fears that privatisation will lead to widespread closures of local post offices and the loss of thousands of jobs.

Campaigners will be on Hucknall High Street today.

Darren Glebocki, of the CWU's Nottingham and district branch, said: "Privatisation of the Royal Mail is old politics, makes no economical or commercial sense and remains deeply unpopular with the British public.

"Privatisation would be devastating for the Royal Mail and the whole country's postal services.

"The one-price-goes-anywhere, six-days-a week universal service to the country's 28 million business and home addresses has been a key part of the UK post for 170 years."

Mr Glebocki added: "Royal Mail has always been a privatisation too far. There is no public mandate for this coalition government to flog off our national assets."

Really that one sentence says it all................................ there ain't much that's lasted that long. This is the one great test of whether the union can defeat this latest attempt to privatise the service. In truth once the idea of it being a business became accepted generally and not a service then the die was cast.

Privatising the Royal Mail is deeply unpopular:

- A YouGov poll in August 2010 showed that only 15 per cent of the public agree with privatising Royal Mail while 60 per cent believe the Royal Mail should remain a wholly publicly-owned organisation

- An ICM poll last year found that 78 per cent of the public believed selling Royal Mail would be a bad deal for the taxpayer and 82 per cent of believed prices will go up

so true the torries need to push for saving to give tax cuts to their palls at the begining of the next ellection so ridding government of burden is their primery objective and Royal Mail falls well within their sights along with LEA NHS and if people think the condem government will fall well the librals will defect to the right just look at Cleg closit Torrie whos seat in sheffield was and still is the most conservative seat in the city
