Lets be honest putting bits of paper through holes in doors doesnt exactly need 10 "A" levels does it, so why put down the burger king staff or is this an animal farm situation where some of us are more equal than others. I have no wish to work Saturdays especially ones which dont finish until 3pm and judging by the reaction in our office this morning nor have the majority of others, as for lost jobs, well so many want EVR in our place, I think we might need to employ a few of those"burger flippers" to get the rounds covered.
No not at the moment obviously - but that if privatisation is allowed without opposition, or without protection for the employees then at some point in the future postal work will be equated to "burger flipping" and the T&Cs will be similar or worse.

You have read more into my post than what I was trying to communicate. Nothing wrong with any work at all as long as you are happy and gain some satisfaction from it. As Thomas Carlyle saidsingingpostman wrote:Lets be honest putting bits of paper through holes in doors doesnt exactly need 10 "A" levels does it, so why put down the burger king staff or is this an animal farm situation where some of us are more equal than others. I was merely attempting to warn people that after privatisation the owners will attempt to erode our T&Cs to as low a level as possible. In fact Crozier/Leighton tried it when they called us overpaid and underworked, and most people understand that "burger flipping" in McDonalds, Burger King etc pay levels and T&C are very low.All work, even cotton spinning, is noble; work is alone noble…A life of ease is not for any man, nor for any god.

There ware a number of motions at conference this year on this very subject:chickenwittle wrote:why dont the union put the saturday issue to the work force instead of always jumping in and saying they are against it i bet the majority of workers would prefer mon to fri mainly because the cwu managed to get us such a crap deal in the last agreement
So I guess they are following the members wishes.126 CATEGORY A:
This Conference agrees that the ongoing CWU strategy in Delivery will be to secure an agreement that provides the option for whole units or areas to introduce Monday-Friday attendances with Saturdays being completed either on overtime or by a separate part-time workforce.
The Postal Executive is instructed accordingly.
Bristol and District Amal (Not Carried)
Nice try though Bristol
and South East Wales although the fact that this one was not carried perhaps needs more investigating.
127 CATEGORY A:
This Conference agrees that the CWU as part of its ongoing strategy for deliveries a referendum is carried out seeking the views of all delivery staff regarding Saturday deliveries. And whether the delivery specification becomes a Monday to Friday service.
The Postal Executive is instructed accordingly.

I cannot believe what I am reading here.
Sure every Saturday off would be great.
I agree offices are undermanned and a lot of folks now again work 6 days, overtime for day 6.
In this day of massive unemployment you want to loose a sixth of the work force?
Are you the same ones that took the £20 for d2d as you probably don't deliver them.
Look after your selves and to hell with others!!!

The issue is bigger than your Saturday finish time. (What time did you finish on Saturday?)
But given that you have already said elsewhere you will be a strikebreaker in any future IA I'm not that surprised you don't get it.
If you saw someone being attacked would your first reaction be - they stole my crayon at nursery school, I'm not helping them.
Judging by most of the comments on here, and judging by the comments of colleagues in my DO, many of whom, like myself, were stalwarts of strike action, forever present on picket lines, but now thoroughly fed-up with going back into work after a strike only to find conditions have worsened, sick of managers laughing their heads off at us, and strike breakers telling us they told us so, there won't be much of a strike to break.
Only a blithering idiot will now ever go on strike to help preserve a job where they will be expected to tramp the streets of a Saturday afternoon up to 3.00pm, and unnecessarily so, that, my friend, is the new reality of 2010 & Beyond.
The CWU has two choices, either they face up to that reality and set about making ammends to correct it, or they continue to bury their heads in the sand and one day face the most embarassing snub any trade union has ever had to face.
As for what time I finished on Saturday, I finished at 12.45, but that is purely down to the fact that no new revision along 2010 & Beyond lines, has been implemented yet. Once the revision is in, I will then have to cut more corners than I've ever had to do in my entire years of service, in order to finish at a decent time, in order to enjoy some quality time away from the RM labour camp.
That's not the way it should be.

Sounds like that should be aimed at union officials on full-time release!budgie06 wrote:

Re: Saturday deliveries could be scrapped under ConDem plans
This is not the sort of news I wanted to read after a meeting of ~10 of my fellow part-time colleagues had with our section lino yesterday...
For several months, we had been able to claim prep overtime, starting as early as 0800 Mon-Fri. But as of Monday, we have to resort to a 0930 start, as the plan is to ensure that our rounds are "double-prepped" by staff who mainly deliver to the considerably easier rounds on other sections. The only saving grace for us was that we can still do a 6 hour day on Saturdays, starting at 0630, to help boost our hours up above our 22.5 hour contracts. I am probably the most fortunate of the group in question, as my round is prepped by a parcel van driver (so his prioirities are going to be "twixxed") and my round takes an average of 4.5 hours to deliver, which excludes meal relief and bundling up time.
It will certainly get rid of the managers' headache of how to implement giving full-timers a Saturday off my regularly than 1-in-6.
It will certainly please some posties who resented the idea of Saturday hours moving in line with Mon-Fri in the near future.
I'm reasonably confident that the CWU reps will be under even more pressure than current (and I do not envy them since the fallout of the recent agreement), trying to protect a 17% drop in the workforce numbers...

You think there wouldn't be queues a mile long for EVR's in every office? I doubt there would be a single compulsory redundancy.dblad wrote:The only thing I can say about you lot wanting Saturday's off. You bunch of selfish tossers. No one wants evr in my office, and if RM take the proposed hours out like they wish maybe 4 of us will be leaving due to compulsory redundancy. Maybe we will get the chance to go to another office, but then maybe not.
Thanks alot to all those that want theyre saturdays off.

Don't kid yourself OnAFlyer...VR is kind of like voting preferences.
Everybody says one thing and does another.
Unless you have another job lined up(unlikely)...or your in your last few years of employment VR is not a sensible choice...and most people realise that long before it gets to the signing on the dotted line part.
Most of us would like to get out but very few of us can realistically.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

If you don't think they'll be a compulsory reundancy when DO's r under staffed as it is....to be polite-you better think again mate...OnAFlyer wrote:You think there wouldn't be queues a mile long for EVR's in every office? Can you explain what you mean by that please, as to me understaffed offices would mean less redundancies when there are less duties.
For instance my office has 11 vacancies that are covered on OT etc, so we could lose 11 duties with no redundancies....
