Postal deliveries on Saturdays could be scrapped under the controversial ConDem plans to sell the Royal Mail.

Business Secretary Vince Cable would allow the company to offer a five-day service, with laws for the privatisation expected to be brought in next month.

He has pledged to keep universal pricing so the cost of a letter will be the same anywhere in the UK.

But sources close to the Government say they can offer "no guarantee" a six-day service will stay.

Furious unions last night warned the loss of the Saturday post would lead to job losses.

Billy Hayes, of the Communication Workers Union, said: "This is the first cut in services of many that privatisation will bring. A drive for profit will take away the public service ethos supported by postal workers and enjoyed by customers for 170 years."

He added: "The immediate attack on Saturday service is the surest sign yet that privatisation of postal services is not in the interests of the UK public. People don't want their post to be sold off and the Government must stop this ideologically driven plan."

Labour leadership contender Ed Balls said privatising the Royal Mail would be "bad news for millions of people who rely on the postal service". He also said he doubts the ConDems will keep their promise to retain the universal pricing scheme.

Mr Cable says competition from the internet and a desperate need for costly modernisation mean privatisation is the only way to keep the Royal Mail safe.

He has said privately the national treasure could fold without outside investment. In a bid to get the Bill through, he is also offering posties the chance to own some shares.

As part of the sell-off, the Treasury would take on the Royal Mail's pension fund debts, estimated at between £8billion and £10billion.

Can't say I'll be sorry to see the back of Saturday Deliveries, but what worries me is the loss of all the Rest Day Cover jobs.

The sooner the better, as far as i'm concerned. As for Billy Hayes piping up again, does he work on a Saturday?, i doubt it very much unless there is something in it for him.

We are so under staffed now that if they took a day out then it would bring the workforce in line with duties and no one would lose their job at my office!

bang on, it's the same at our place. we have been carrying over 10 vacancies for ages . there are not enough staff to do the job now. a couple call in sick and it all falls down.

There are plenty of staff who want to take VR so losing the saturday could be a good thing for them.

I would love to never have to work saturday ever again, would do me a huge favour! Sats are compulsory in my office as we dont have a "rest day". Ile be very surprised if it happens tho but jumping for joy if it does !

Losing a Saturday will be a GOD-SEND and the sooner the better as far as i'm concerned. Not to long ago - how many folk on here where saying about losing out on Family Time, Playing/Watching sport(Season Tickets) on a Sat other outdoor activities we'd all be winners not working a Sat. Thou a wouldn't mind OT on a Sat at time and a half... lol

This could have a big affect on MCs as would MCs need to be open Friday nights if it happened? It will also mean more work for DOs as for thing like d2d, instead of it being spread over 6 days it will be spread over 5 so would they have to make DO staff work longer, DO staff might be started even later and each one have a collection bolted onto the end of their duty. There would probably never be a quiet day in DOs either.
