Royal Mail privatisation verdict: Deliver us from evil

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

Scrapping Saturday deliveries would be just the start - the first downpayment - if Royal Mail is privatised. Owners striving to maximise profits from a valuable public service would inevitably look at how to run it on the cheap.

How long would it be before letters started arriving at tea time instead of before lunch? Or collections from post boxes were cut? Who owns Royal Mail isn't a side issue. It is central to the quality of service, price of stamps and the future of the Post Office network.

The idea of Dutch or German shareholders banking the profits is ludicrous economics as well as politics.

Royal Mail must adapt to compete and, contrary to ConDem propaganda, is doing so with tens of thousands of jobs already gone.

Business Secretary Vince Cable should rethink the sale. Margaret Thatcher sold off the family silver yet realised that the Royal Mail was an auction too far.

John Major, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown all looked for a deal until forced to retreat.

Ending Saturday deliveries is one of many reasons why there'll be a public backlash.
