KEEP THE POST PUBLIC CAMPAIGN
LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE 2010 – CWU CONTEMPORARY RESOLUTION

Following the issue of LTB 795/10 on 14th September 2010, the CWU nationally submitted a similar Contemporary resolution to the Labour Party on Friday 17th September 2010.

We can advise branches that the motion has been accepted by the Conference Arrangements Committee and will now progress to the ballot stage - where the trade union affiliates will select the four contemporary issues to be discussed during the conference in Manchester next week.

I attach this resolution, together with the suggested CLP resolution issued to you last week in LTB 795/10.

You will recall that LTB 795/10 asked branches to get local CLPs to submit the model resolution. We would be grateful to know if any branch was successful in doing this. Therefore, if you are aware of any CLPs who submitted this resolution to the 2010 Labour Party Conference to contact the General Secretary’s Office by 12 noon Thursday 23rd September 2010.

CWU Contemporary Resolution to the 2010 Labour Party Conference

TITLE : PROMOTING AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE COALITION ATTACK UPON PUBLIC SERVICES (ROYAL MAIL)

Conference notes the publication by the Government on the 10th September of the update on the Hooper Report. Conference registers that this contains a wide-ranging attack on Royal Mail and the universal service by proposing its privatisation and break-up.

Conference rejects such a proposal and pledges itself to support the Campaign to Keep the Post Public. Conference calls upon the PLP to maintain a three line whip against the Government’s proposed Bill.

Conference recognises the valuable contribution of postal workers to local communities. Conference further recognises the importance to 28 million homes and businesses across the country of continuing to receive mail six days a week, with the promise that “one price goes everywhere”.

Conference further notes Labour’s commitment in Government to ensure that Royal Mail modernisation took place wholly within the public sector, and supports our manifesto commitment which said “continued modernisation and investment will be needed by the Royal Mail in the public sector..”
