Royal Mail Full Selloff Not Ruled Out by Government, Cable Tells Telegraph

U.K. Business Secretary Vince Cable hasn’t ruled out a full privatization of Royal Mail Group Plc, the Daily Telegraph reported, citing an interview with Cable.

The Business Secretary also said mail deliveries may drop to five days a week and be taken over by other companies, the newspaper reported.

Cable said earlier this month that legislation is due this autumn on the future of Royal Mail and any decision will draw on the findings of a report by Richard Hooper, a former communications regulator.
Telegraph wrote:Another forthcoming battle is over selling Royal Mail, possibly in a full privatisation with no government stake. "We're not ruling that out. We're keeping different options open." Nor does he rule out deliveries dropping to five days a week and being taken over by other companies. "The one thing that will be agreed is the guarantee of universal service – that everyone in the UK can post a letter at the same price and get home deliveries. That will be maintained."

The Communication Workers Union is now talking about blocking government plans in "the fight of its life". Mr Cable, who is "not looking for a punch-up with the CWU", hopes that workers will see reason. But he also warns: "We've got no intention of backing off. We're determined to see this through."

Well there we have it.

No half measures. 5 day a week deliveries meaning another 1/6th staff gone. He is not looking for a fight with the CWU but it doesn't look like there is any compromise and he/they will fight to see this through.

Now if the CWU is going to stand by this agreement without making it extremely difficult to see it move forward, despite the terms, then there is no point in mounting a campaign - they need to show any prospective buyer that pussy is not for sale.

Oh oh ,end of USO then . Thin end of the wedge and all that. Bye bye SME's ,your prices WILL double and your market WILL shrink. All in one nice little Liberal phrase, course it could be a slip of the tongue, but given their recent track record ,I wouldn't bet on it :chuckle
Bye

And how does Vince Cable think that a full privitisation will maintain the uSO. He must live in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks that TNT will deliver one letter to the more remote parts of the UK for one single price. Even if they dropped our wages to the legal minimum they would not be able to deliver at the current price and make the sort of profits that their share holders will be happy with. These sort of companies will not subsidise the loss earners with the profitable parts of the business. If they decide to deliver only to the nearest town and expect outlying villagers to collect their own mail then the USO will not be maintained, so Vince although whilst labour were in power, you were considered one of the more sensible of politicians by many, you seem to be losing it badly mate. Power seems to have distorted your reasoning.

Doing away with Saturday deliveries will take an Act of Parliament. It isn't within the CWU's power to negotiate it away.
And if it means YOU LOSE YOUR JOB, will you be so keen?
Let's put 16 000 people on the dole queue so I don't have to work on Saturday?

You wouldn't be sacking 16,000 people,
You'd be offering VR terms to people who want to leave the job
Belive me, there would be a lot more than 16,000 willing to go into that Q for VR
And by having a M to F service & OT on a sat. you'd have been saving FT jobs making them more secure
And RM would be pleased with the savings too, so Billy wouldn't have had to bargain AWAY so many of our terms and conditions that he did to come up with his last crap deal

Or maybe Billy was thinking about losing 16,000 peoples SUBS ?

Confused.

1. I never mentioned sackings but anyway.
2. Do you really think RM would offer 16 000 VRs?
And I doubt if the queue would be that long. Lots of people say they would take it but it when it comes to it they back down.Unless you can afford to retire or have another job lined up it isn't a good option.
3. If it is a Mon-Fri service who is doing o/t on Saturday and why?

It's a good point POSTMAN...most of the attendance patterns like the week of scheme and 9 day fortnights would be screwed overnight.
