ARROGANT union bosses ignored their own members by backing one of David Miliband's rivals for the Labour leadership.

Pollsters quizzed 500 posties for CWU chiefs to find out who would get their vote as Gordon Brown's successor.

Mr Miliband was the No 1 choice but the union's national executive endorsed Ed Balls, who came second. Ed Miliband, David's younger brother was third. A source said: "It's bizarre. Why did they back Ed Balls when their own members are supporting David Miliband?"

A CWU spokesman said: "It was a small poll for the executive committee's guidance.

"The union also held its own hustings with the five leadership candidates and surveyed the audience afterwards. The committee made the decision to endorse Ed Balls after looking at all the information."

A spokeswoman for David Miliband said: "We're delighted to learn David had the highest level of support among CWU members."

The revelation further underlines the trade union movement's bid to derail David Miliband.

The Sun revealed last week how the GMB and Unite have spent an estimated £500,000 trying to get "Red" Ed Miliband elected.

A poll yesterday suggested he had edged ahead of his brother. Ed, who has portrayed himself as the "candidate for working people" said the "momentum" was now with him.



The shadow energy secretary insisted the party was "making a judgment about the best person to beat David Cameron, and I think they are turning to me".

David Miliband said the poll was "a wake up call" for his supporters to get out and vote.

He said: "I think I offer the best chance not just for a fight in opposition but for a Labour government."

i reiterate, i wrote to D Milliband asking him to oppose the privatisation, he dodged it. Something to do with MPs not being able to vote in this instance as it was an early or first something or other. Slick.

It was an EDM - An Early Day Motion - Apparently its a convention in the House of Idiots sorry Parliament, that Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet members, and their minions that hold government posts and their shadows as well, will not sign an EDM even if they support it. In fact its why one of the Government PPS resigned so he could sign the last anti-privatisation EDM.
