I was sure I'd seen a bead of sweat on my line manager the other day - Until I realised that he had just brushed past me too close

Thats what we have been saying - it just takes a bit longer for the numpties to cotton on! TNT, DHL, Fedex or anyone else can handle the mail but it still ain't going the last mile whilst we are out - if they can't set up a delivery network and still do it for 13p per item I'll show my backside on the town hall steps at dinner time on Saturday.

Clarification

Post by F0zziebear »

It's 40% of business mail. 11% of total has gone to competitors and I reckon a total of 20% will go to the competition.

If the competition set-up their network properly they will be able to deliver mail for under 10p per item, but they need regular baseline volume for this to make economic sense. It will take them several years to make the returns on their initial investment required to build their own network

Nice to see we've moved off my backside and back to the meat.

As you say fozzie there would have to be a massive investment to set up a delivery network and I doubt anyone is prepared to wait that long for a return.
As for 10p an item - I'd have to see the paperwork before I'd believe that.

Of course as you are setting up the network others would be waiting in the wings to cream off the lucrative parts of your business and some wassock postcom liberal would be twisting your arm up your back to deliver their mail for half price - aye it's a wicked world right enough.

re: Only way to make money in Uk market

Post by F0zziebear »

The current margins for competitors is tiny. They are charging approx 17.5p to companies of which 13.5p goes to RM and they have to somehow collect, sort, and distribute the mail and find a profit. So if anyone thinks the competition are creaming big profits you're soarly mistaken.

the only way to make money (serious margins) is to deliver it yourself.

It will happen, just a question of how long. No one really wants to be the first, however that's how you gain competitive advantage and make real money before your competitors can catch-up.

No need to worry about your mail disappearing in big numbers just yet, which means still plenty of jobs, but just the same/less revenue across the industry being spread across more people. Something has to give, basic economics.

Good luck
