The United States Postal Service (USPS®) is well on its way to achieving its goal of reducing its energy use by 30 per cent by 2015, it has been announced.
USPS has made the comments following the anniversary of the opening of its 'green roof' atop its Manhattan mail processing facility last year.
The roof covers 109,000 square feet, was built using 90 per cent recyclable materials and will not need replacing for 50 years.
"A year ago, the postal service projected the green roof would help the Morgan facility save $30,000 in annual energy expenses," said Tom Samra, vice president, Facilities.
"We're pleased to have surpassed that goal, saving more than $1 million since the implementation of the green roof and other energy–saving measures at Morgan."
The post office has long been considered a sustainability leader, with over 75 environmental awards.
Other USPS services which can be utilized include the address verification tool, which aims to reduce costs associated with returned mail.
