All I would add is I`m sure there are people living in certain areas who would argue the exact opposite. I suppose it`s down to personal experience.
I grew up in an area which had a great mixture of people from all over the old Empire and my experiences were invariably positive. When you grow up in a big port, you have friends with families who have originated from many different places. I'm not saying it was some sort of multi-racial paradise, but you grow up being tolerant. So I don't really mind who comes here. Most people intigrate eventually. I don't suppose we're ever going to see eye to eye on this, but I certainly agree with that last sentence.

The answer to the Question is A BIG YES... This Job for the security reasons need to have ENGLISH spoken only... Inlight of the terror bombings and Illegals in this country with the home office not knowing half of who anybody is anymore... I suggest the ID cards COULD help... Even if it COULD be used by Big Brother to put our human rights under the microscope i do think the greater good will prevail... I hope???? It is such a shame that this is needed.. In my opinion... Is there any other opition??????

For anyone living in the wildes of the countryside without any of it on your door step and think ENGLANDS/SCOTLANDS/WALES/IRELANDS GREEN AND PLEASANT FIELDS ARE ALL NICE AND ROSIE NEED TO LIVE IN THE EAST END OF LONDON (were i come from) AND MANY OF THE TOWNS AND CITYS AND GET A REALITY CHECK.....

As i said in before its such a shame but what else can WE ALL DO TO KEEP THIS COUNTRY SECURE????

OUT

PS and our jobs???

I wouldn't know mate. If I attempted to walk on 90% of these islands, I would get done for trespassing.

The Earl of Derby once asked Leo McGree what he could expect for his land if there was a revolution. McGree replied "a reciept".

Now although this thread wandered slightly off the topic like one of Mr Corbett's monologues in 'The Two Ronnies', it's good to see people being able to reach some consensus on some of the issues. Stuff the 2.5% pay 'offer'. This forum has done more to make me realise that we can hold our heads up high at the end of this dispute, irrespective of the outcome. Lots of differing opinions on a wide range of issues, but unlike Leighton and Crozier, we listen to each other and negotiate a path forward that ends in mutual respect.

It's true this has gone off track a little. I would however like to say that this nation must truly be "THE" place to be when someone would hide in a space behind the dashboard of a Renault Espace in order to illegally enter this country. How many nations would put up with the kind of things we put up with?

You would think it would be easier to control immigration with being an island but that doesn't seem to be the case. Would ID cards be the answer or would they too be just another money spinner for the high tech counterfeiters?

A money spinner for the government more like seeing as they expect us to pay for them.

I'm wondering why you resurrected the thread after 28 hours and a truce had been declared amongst the warring factions.

Well being old and grey I don't always see things the first time round and I don't consider myself a "warring faction" but I do think that it is an engaging subject open to much debate.

Apologies mate. I was asking Rocky. By the way, there's nothing wrong with being old and grey. A minority like us should stick together or we might end up being vicimised.

Thanks I wasn't being arsey though - I'm much too refined for that!

How about asking for an over 60's conference - if the pension document is anything to go by we could be having an octogenarian conference in the not too distant future - in fact I may write to Al to ask him if I can stay on until I am 80 .......... ha ha ha ha ha - no not really

I don't think you will have to ask him mate. I reckon we'll all have to carry on until we're at death's door just to pull the business out of the hole management and these governments have dug us into. A zimmer frame with panniers will be our lot if we lose this dispute.

Ha ha ha ha - I liked the zimmer frame theory - I could actually see myself hobbling down the road with the panniers full of sky mags and a pit bull biting my leg.
